GTA Developers Rockstar Games Awarded BAFTA Fellowship
Rockstar Games, the studio that creates and develops the massively successful Grand Theft Auto Series, will receive a lifetime achievement award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) – the Academy’s most prestigious award – at the upcoming game awards on the 12th of March.
BAFTA began to award the fellowship to members of the video game industry in 2007, after having previously awarded it only to film and television luminaries like Charlie Chaplin and Woody Allen.
Sam Houser, who co-founded Rockstar in 1998 with his brother Dan, said:
“We have long believed in the potential for videogames to become a new form of cultural expression and worked to show that in our games, so for us accepting the BAFTA Fellowship is incredibly humbling. This honour reflects the creative vision and dedication of a huge number of people over many years, and we look forward to accepting the Fellowship on their behalf.”
The Grand Theft Auto games have long been controversial for their depictions of mature and violent content, but have also been highly praised by critics and audiences alike – indeed, more often than not any moral outrage towards the series has emanated from religious leaders and politicians with little to no actual knowledge of the series.
Previous video game recipients of the fellowship have included Will Wright, Shigeru Miyamoto, Nolan Bushnell and Gabe Newell.

With well over a million players vying for a cumulative 112 million commands to be enacted, Twitch Plays Pokemon – where people use the Twitch chat channel to control a game of Pokemon Red by typing out commands like ‘up’, ‘start’, and so on – has finally completed Pokemon Red in a mere 16 days, 7 hours 45 minutes and 30 seconds.
Overall over 9 million viewers watched the stream as the main character stumbled, rotated and paused his way to his eventual victory over the Elite 4. Having completed Pokemon red, the channel has moved onto the task of taking on Pokemon Crystal.
