After reports leaked that Warner Bros. have acquired the movie rights to the massively successful game Minecraft, creator Markus Persson (also known to the community as Notch) confirmed the project on his twitter account:

Notch told IGN that Mojang “are in talks with WB, and have been so while” before promoting his work with the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a non-profit organisation aimed at protecting digital rights.

This all follows the news that Notch had shut down a Kickstarter project for a fan-funded Minecraft movie. The film, entitled ‘The Birth of Man’ was set up by Brandon Laatsch, a YouTuber and one of the creators of the ‘freddiew’ channel, and had aimed to raise $600,000 USD.

Over the years since its initial beta release, Minecraft has spawned a whole generation of YouTube channels who create videos based on the game. These vary from so-called Let’s Play videos to parody music videos – some of which have garnered over 128 million views on YouTube, like the one below.

It therefore comes as no surprise that Mojang and Warner Bros. would look to create a movie, especially after the universal success of the recent LEGO movie. Indeed, the producer for that film, Roy Lee has been rumoured to have signed on to produce the Minecraft movie.
