Every week we’re going to be taking a brief look at the biggest and best new releases on DVD and Blu-Ray. Unless otherwise stated, everything listed below is due for release next Monday – so in this case, Monday 30th July – and each title is now available for pre-order on zavvi.com. This week: Julia Roberts is an evil queen, John Cusack is Edgar Allen Poe and the brilliantly rubbish Corey Feldman/Corey Haim vehicle Licence to Drive makes its UK DVD debut…
Directed by Tarsem – the director behind The Fall, which is surely one of the best-looking films ever made – Mirror Mirror is a fresh and funny retelling of the Snow White legend. A family adventure for all ages, starring Oscar winner Julia Roberts as the evil Queen who ruthlessly rules her captured kingdom and Lily Collins (The Blind Side) as Snow White, the princess in exile, plus Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as the Prince.
License to Drive [DVD]
Famous eighties acting duo Corey Feldman and Corey Haim team up in madcap teen comedy Licence to Drive.
Les’s friends are relying on him to pass his driving test so he can provide the wheels for the weekend, but he’s more interested in impressing his date Mercedes (Heather Graham). When things don’t go according to plan he steals his grandpa’s immaculate Cadillac. But what was supposed to be a dream date soon turns into a nightmare when Mercedes gets drunk, dances on the bonnet in her stilettos, then passes out in the back.
He calls on his old friend Dean for help and things go from bad to worse when the car is towed and a car chase leads to disastrous consequences.
When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper – part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story.
Realising a serial killer is on the loose using Poe’s writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author’s help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer’s next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it’s too late.
