The first true successor to Sony’s popular Playstation Portable console – better known as the PSP – the Playstation Vita is the most technologically sophisticated handheld gaming device ever made. Featuring a 5-inch OLED screen, dual thumbsticks, touch control and dual quad-core processors, the Vita is arguably the first handheld to offer up true “next-gen” gaming experiences. With exclusive iterations of franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty now available, the Vita has really started to come into its own of late, and if you have any questions about the console or what it can do, hopefully our FAQ below will have a few answers for you…

How big is it?

The Playstation Vita is 7.2 inches long, 3.2 inches wide and 0.7 inches high. It weighs between 260 and 280 grams depending on which model you’re using.

Is it online?

Yes. In addition to supporting Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as standard, the console is also available with optional 3G support.

Does it play UMDs?

No. Vita games come on proprietary Flash memory cards, and are also available as downloads from the Playstation Network or “PSN” as it is more commonly known. The Vita does support PSP software, but only if it has been downloaded from PSN.

Can I play movies on it?

Yes. You can import your own movies (or music, or pictures) onto the Vita by using the free Content Manager application: versions for PC and Mac can be downloaded directly from here. You can also buy and rent movies via PSN, and a Netflix app is rumoured to be in the pipeline.

How long does the battery last?

According to Sony, the Vita’s battery lasts for between 3 and 5 hours when playing games, 5 hours when watching video or up to 9 hours if you’re using it to listen to music. Fully charging the battery (from 0%) takes around 2.5 hours.

Can I charge the battery via USB?

Yes, although you need to shut the system down completely before doing this. If it’s on standby, the console won’t recharge.

Can I use social media apps on it?

Yes. Facebook, Flickr, Skype and Twitter are all supported. A Youtube app is expected to launch before the end of the year.

I already have a PSN account on my PS3. Do I need to sign up again?

No. You can sign in using your PSN I.D and all of your game history (along with Trophies) will be transferred across to the Vita.

Does it connect with the PS3?

Yes. You can manage your memory card data and shares Trophies, and even view video and music from your PS3 wirelessly via Remote Play. And provided the game is compatible, you can (for example) pause a game on your PS3 before resuming it on the Vita.

Does the Vita support voice chat?

Yes. Almost all PS3-compatible headsets are compatible with the Vita too.

Are there any exclusive Sony-developed games available for it?

Yes. To name only a few: Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, Modnation Racers and Wipeout all have Vita-exclusive titles available. In addition, a Vita-only Killzone title is currently due for release next year. To visit our dedicated Playstation Vita software store, simply click here.

What other features does it have?

There’s a touch-pad on the rear of the unit, a microphone, stereo speakers and two cameras: one on the front and one on the back. The console also uses the PS3’s Sixaxis motion-control system. You can also take your own screenshots by pressing the Start and Playstation buttons together at once.
