Just a few short years ago, anyone who didn’t attend E3 for themselves would only know about the trailers listed below from descriptions in magazines; but E3 in 2012 was all about the general public, and almost all of these trailers appeared online mere minutes after they debuted on the show floor in Los Angeles. Here are our five favourites….
Inexplicably left off the menu during Nintendo’s main E3 press conference, Project P-100 was instead revealed shortly afterwards. It’s a Wii U exclusive, is being developed by Platinum games – the Osaka-based geniuses responsible for the likes of Bayonetta and Vanquish – and whilst we have no idea what on earth is going on in the trailer, we do know that it looks like a lot of fun.
Its primary influences may be a little too familiar for some, but Naughty Dog’s post-Uncharted, post-apocalyptic action thriller looks like something deeply special regardless; and considerably darker than Nate Drake’s rollicking Technicolor adventures. Tense and gritty, you can expect a monster hit.
NFS: Hot Pursuit showed that Criterion had every intention of slyly keeping their Burnout series alive by releasing it under a different name, and Most Wanted looks like a ramped-up sequel to Burnout Paradise more than anything else. And who could possibly be unhappy about that?
DUE: November 2nd, 2012
How Ubisoft managed to keep Watch Dogs completely under wraps until their E3 reveal is a complete mystery, and as a result it was one of the expo’s few genuine surprises. It’s a mishmash of too many things to list here, one of E3’s only notable sandboxes, and a current-gen project that couldn’t look any slicker.
Looking like a cross between Bayonetta and Vanquish, Platinum’s none-more-demented, all-action Metal Gear title is officially our most anticipated game of 2013. Visuals aside it bears scant relation to anything Hideo Kojima has ever created, so this is very much Platinum’s show through and through. Amen.
DUE: Early 2013
Honourable mentions: Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, Beyond: Two Souls, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Tomb Raider, ZombiU, Far Cry 3, LEGO City: Undercover.
