I recall feeling great excitement when AvP was announced, I had read the graphic novel and was eager to see how the big screen version compared. Was it better? Well, the answer is a non commital yes and no! The storyline was the main difference, AvP was set firmly on earth and dealt with the discovery of a mysterious pyramid in Antarctica. A team consisting of scientists, archeologists and hired guns are dispatched to explore and gather further information. What they find is an intergalactic hunting ground and when our two titular characters arrive, things predictably go down hill very fast. The storyline was a rather nifty idea and cemented the idea that us humans have been interacting with the two alien species for thousands of years. Way better than the simple seed an off world colony for the purposes of a hunt storyline of the graphic novel. The team dispatched is headed by Charles Bishop Weyland, co-founder of Weyland Yutani, played by the ever excellent Lance Henrikson, the rest of the characters are under developed and merely fodder for our alien friends to dispatch in numerous ways. Even the main female lead Lex, played by Sanaa Lathan, is an underdone attempt at a "new" Ripley. Fail. The half baked characters are a real shame as they would have provided some much needed focus, as they are, no one really cares about them or their predicament. So we have a decent story with characters you don't care about. Surely the action and horror will compensate for that?! Well, there is no horror. While other movies in the Alien and Predator franchises weren't afraid of liberally applying the red stuff, this film seems to have been pitched at a younger audience, no doubt to boost revenue, which leaves you feeling a bit cheated. Sure people and aliens are dispatched, but it's largely done in a very sanitised way from the human point of view, only the aliens achieve full gory demises - a shame, should have pitched it for grown ups!! When viewed as an action film AvP does deliver, once the Aliens and Predators occupy screen time and start knocking seven bells out of each other you can't help but whoop at what you're watching! There are plenty of exciting set pieces and the main Predator "Scar" is superb. There's also a very satisfying climax involving the Alien Queen facing off against Scar which is brilliant. I appreciated the Predator 2 nod when a number of Predators interact with Lex at the end, I did however find myself groaning at the very end when a sequel is firmly flown up the flag pole. Subtle. View this as an action film and you'all have fun, it's entertaining, but you can't help but feel that AvP could have been more ... Much more!
A fun movie for fans of the alien and predator franchise. The special effects do not hold up very well. The steel book however is very nice and the artwork looks killer. Also is region A and B.
Beautiful steelbook guys, excellent addition to my AVP collection! Shipping to US was super cheap and arrived in approx 2 weeks. Not bad for the price. Will be doing business again! Thanks very much!
Very happy with the item, physical appearance is great and it's a great and perfect addition to any steelbook collection.
excellent steelbook finish, disc is better quality than first release in picture and dts sound, brilliant.
Great looking steelbook, this is must have for any Alien or Predator fans out there. I was waiting for the day to come when this steelbook finally was announced. I love it!
This was a massivley awaited film for me ever since the tease of the alien skull on display in Predator 2. So did it deliver after a 15 year wait??? Yes it did in a respect the aliens and predators knocking lumps out of each other was what i expected and got. Now as to the story i saw that they had taken elements from some of the dark horse comics i read in the 90's, for example a female heroin which was a nice change along with a few other bits. The addition of Weyland went a bit backwards as it didnt line up with Alien 3 time line but i could see what they were driving at by adding him and the company. This is a must own for any Alien or Predator die hards like myself but a nice addition to any collection.
