Steelbook

Awesome Steelbook for an Awesome movie.. This in my book is one of the better Scorsese's movies but yet still way to hard to pick a nr. 1 so yea hurry up and get this edition if you're a fan of Steelbooks (like i've become after gettin this, my first ever steelbook). Sadly there was a small scratch on my copy's front but no dont know who i could blame for that really as it was under the plastic so could have happend anywhere along the way.

Underrated Scorsese.

Such an underrated film from the one of the greatest living director's, Martin Scorsese. I really think this is a masterful gem that gets better and better with each viewing. Unbelievable performances by DiCaprio, Diaz and of course Daniel Day-Lewis. There was so much thought and care put into this film, you could really tell that overall it's a love letter to New York itself. While the film is gritty and violent it's such an entertaining and re-watchable film. A lot of props to the: cinematographer, set and costume designer and composer for really helping bring this film to life even more. It's sad that a lot of people either haven't seen it or Scorsese's other recent films like The Departed, Hugo, Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street have overshadowed it. This film is a must-see. And while the SteelBook is at a great price I would highly recommend picking it up. It's completely glossy all around and features some nice artwork. I would've liked a more colorful inside with a different image (maybe of the final battle), but for the price you really can't complain at all. It's a solid Zavvi release.

Nice artwork

Good film however not nearly one of Scorsese's best. Picture and sound quality are brilliant and although the artwork is the standard cover it still looks very nice and has a great gloss finish. One of the only issues with the artwork is that the font on the spine appears to be of strange quality and Scorsese's name almost unreadable. Overall it is a good addition to anyone's collection and was bought for a good price.

Gangs of New York

This review is for the blu-ray as most will already be well acquainted with this film and its storyline. The blu ray adds tremendously to the viewing pleasure of what is already an outstanding piece of work from Martin Scorsese. The characters truly come to life thanks to the transfer, many details of the film that were previously not seen or appreciated due to the graininess of the sp edition dvd now come to life in high relief. The only downside to this blu ray was the failure to also upgrade the sound to HD master audio, none the less still a riveting and engrossing cinematic experience and a very worth while upgrade purchase on blu ray unlike so many others.

No, not the original Blu-ray transfer!

Zaavi have once again come up with a beautiful steelbook release for this movie. The glossy finish is very nice, and despite some ripples of discontent amongst the Blu-ray community regarding the chosen artwork for it, I think the outer covers actually look pretty good. Unfortunately this artwork is repeated on the inside, which is a shame; it would have been nice to see some different images used there. But overall, I'm a fan of this packaging, and that is the only reason I gave this 3 stars. Unfortunately, the film transfer used is the absolutely notorious original Blu-ray transfer from several years ago. Routinely voted as one of the worst transfers in Blu-ray's short history, it is reviled amongst collectors worldwide for its sub-par quality. In 2010, Disney released a remastered version that, by all accounts, has restored this film and its Bu-ray release to its rightful glory, so why this terrible transfer has been chosen for this steelbook release is an absolute mystery. In short, this is a packaging-only buy. If you are a film purist, or just enjoy Blu-ray quality films, steer well clear of this and grab the 2010 Disney remastered US version. I will be sourcing the far superior print, then putting the disc in this case ;)

"That's a wound".

Steelbook has a nice shiney finish to it, but can leave fingerprint and smudges easily. The artwork is standard and pretty much identical to the regular cover of the DVD or normal blu ray release. It would've been preferable to have some alternate artwork to this film. The cropping of the image itself is also a bit poor. DiCaprio's eye only just fits in the space, and Day-Lewis' eye is completely cropped. The back artwork, I have no problem with the flag artwork, but the fact that both the front and back are repeated on the inside is very lazy. Overall, not the greatest steelbook released and should've been done far better.
