A great release marred by the fact that some episodes have had the audio mapped incorrectly.
I am blown away by the quality of this set. Not only is the picture quality the best it's ever going to be on a TV show from 1987 but the extras are brilliant too! Even they are in HD. To go back to the original film negatives and re-cut each show must have been painstaking but the end result means that each show is almost like it's brand-new to me. The original shows which were recorded to tape were really showing their age after so many years and I found them very difficult to watch. But I love watching these new HD versions. Watching the brand new documentaries is really illuminating too, as you get interviews from the cast on the creation of the series, the casting of all the characters and the filming the series itself. Without a doubt, the best money you'll ever spend on Star Trek. I'll be watching these for years to come.
Here it is, the best Star Trek series in my opinion, remastered, cleaned up and in high definition... been waiting for this ever since they announced it! As a first series, it suffers as most of the episodes are quite weak, but hey we don't care about that, we all want it regardless! The picture is so amazing and the sound is out of this world. If you are a Star Trek fan, you have to have this... can't wait for season 2!
Firstly the good points. CBS has lovingly restored this first season of Star Trek TNG so that it looks like it was filmed yesterday, plus the Enterprise looks gorgeous is the space shots where you can see all the detail that you were never able to see before on the DVD/VHS copies of the series. During the restoration, they have also taken advantage of the fact that they can now clear up some of the mistakes made when the series was first put together - for example, in Encounter at Farpoint, when the Enterprise is sending energy to the 'creature', the energy beam previously came from the Captains Yacht on the underside of the saucer. In this restored version, the energy beam now comes from the phase array, which is how it should always have been. They have however failed to restore some poor editing mistakes (11001001 when docked at star base, you see star base crew enter the outer airlock of the Enterprise, but in the next shot you see the star base crew leaving the star base and approaching the airlock - the two scenes are in the wrong order). Now the bad points. If you have a surround sound system, you will be tearing your hair out as on some of the episodes the sound isn't mixed correctly (I do not have surround sound, but I could tell there were sound problems, which are clearly evident on the episode Haven). On some other entertainment retailer sites, people are going mad saying that they are returning their disks owing to the sound problems, so you may wish to hold on for a month or so until hopefully the sound problems get corrected (that is if CBS are bothered about the sound). I give this 4 out of 5 as it looks amazing but the sound quality does let it down at times.
