We've come on holiday by mistake...

Beautifully packaged edition of a true classic. Classy, nicely embossed Steelbook, timeless, hilarious, touching movie. Essential purchase.

Awful

Just awful. I've only watched the blu-ray so far & I'm amazed (in a bad way). The transfer is grainy, listless & dull, but worse is the sound - for some reason the blu-ray (and even the DVD) has been divested of the excellent surround sound found on separate discs & only comes with very flat stereo. There's no booklet in the case, the 'steel' cover is rubbish. I can't see myself even watching this again, the upscaled DVD copy I have looks far better & of course comes with 5.1 Dolby Surround. Seriously, don't bother.

Wonderful steelbook for the fans

Having found this steelbook on sale for just under 5 pounds I couldn't resist. Having been my favorite film for many years I have watched the DVD copy to death so I was interested to see how much better the film is on the Blu Ray treatment. Firstly the sound is a massive improvement over that of the DVD, it sounds clear and crisp which is a lovely feature seeing as how the film is so dialogue intensive. Put this film in a good home cinema set and it will feel like you are there. Visually though it isn't quite so amazing to look at in comparison to lets say the Bond films of the same period. Though I believe this is mainly to do with the fact that the 35mm film stock and camera set ups were most likely a lot cheaper. There are still improvements however with many of the finer details such as the labels in the kitchen and the texture of the clothing showing itself far more capably than before. I wouldn't use this to show off the Blu Ray format however. The steelbook itself is beautiful with the window frame and the text being lovingly embossed. The artwork is well chosen and it feels like a really expensive product for something that is so cheap. If you are a big Withnail and i fan or just a fan of dark humour I would heavily recommend purchasing it.

The ease of the transaction and the speed the parcel was delivered I can not fault, as this was a steelbook I did appreciate the extra packaging to make sure it got to me in pristine condition. I can guarantee I will be back in the near future to add to my collection.

Great Purchase

This is a really nice looking edition of what is one of the greatest movies ever made. Well worth buying, especially as it comes with both the blu-ray and dvd editions.

Withnail and I - Zavvi Exclusive Limited Edition Steelbook

This is a disappointing release containing none of the wonderful extras incuded on the standard blu-ray release of the same film by the same studio (Studio Canal). Missing also is the DTA-MA soundtrack available on the solo blu-ray release. Here we have only a standard stereo soundtrack which is adequate but not inspiring. What you are paying for is the packaging - the steelbox itself - which is good quality though why it is called a steelbook I don't know as there is no book of any kind - and I would suggest that this release should be identical to the standard blu-ray and it isn't..

a classic

Ahhhh how can anyone resist the tale of unemployed actors in London of the Sixties? Richard E Grant and Paul McCann are brilliant - supported by Richard Griffiths as Withnail's pervy Uncle and a great range of other classic characters as they travel off to Penrith to sample the cottage his uncle has loaned them.
