    Description

Few bands can stir memories of the eighties like Van Halen – who in many ways were the epitomisation of that decade – with big hair, flamboyant garb, and more than their fair share of catchy synthesized hooks. Formed in 1974, the band went on to become one of the most celebrated and influential groups of all time winning numerous accolades and selling more than 75 million albums worldwide, with hits like "Jump" and "Panama", fondly remaining some of the most popular rock anthems of all time.

The bands twelfth studio album, and first since 1998's "Van Halen III", is "A Different Kind of Truth" which is also the first to feature David Lee Roth in the role of lead vocalist since their landmark release "1984". The album is as heavy as ever with a tone that, on more than one occasion, recalls the stormy flourishes of their 1978 self titled debut. Tracks of particular interest include "China Town", "Big River", and "She's the Woman". With the return of Roth and a wide range of fresh, exciting material, "A Different Kind of Truth" should appeal to both long time fans and newcomers alike!

This Deluxe Edition also boasts a DVD that features acoustic performances of "Panama", "You And Your Blues", and "Beautiful Girls". (Adam Bibby)

    A Different Kind Of Truth

It's good to see that Van Halen is back with the lead singer David Lee Roth, and they've produced a very good album. There are some good songs on A Different Kind Of Truth, but I didn't think it was as good as the 1984 album. Nonetheless, it's still worth getting, as it rocks out, especially when you put in your CD player, turn it up as loud as you can, and play it the way it should be played. Long live heavy metal.

A Different Kind Of Truth (Deluxe Edition)

I approached this album with a degree of both trepidation and excitement. Would the songs be good enough? Can David Lee Roth still cut it? I am not disappointed! From the opening hook of 'Tattoo' through the edge and aggression of 'China Town', 'Bullethead' and 'Honeybabysweetiedoll' and humour behind 'Stay Frosty' this is classic Van Halen. Add to that the DVD with the deluxe addition and what you have is classic Van Halen, with a little more grey maybe but classic all the same.

    VH are back!

I don't have any specific loyalties to the band line-ups, but it does seem clear that the combo of DLR and EVH is delivering some very cool tunes! I was uncertain about the absence of MA, but the bass playing is just fine, and the background harmonies are still there. I recall seeing Eddie on their first UK tour, and the sound he is making on this one is no less impressive. Massive tone from one of the masters! Bought on a whim, and glad I did. The version with the DVD included is a no-brainer for the price, and entertaining it is too!
