Gillo Pontecorvo's presents a harrowing, documentary-style depiction of the Algerian's people's struggle to liberate themselves from France between 1954 and 1962. The film creates a stunning illusion of realism by combining actual newsreel footage with staged sequences featuring amateur and professional actors playing characters based on real people (including Saadi Yacef, the one-time leader of the FLN in occupied Algiers). With it's depiction of political torture and violence retaining every bit of the impact they had upon the film's original release, THE BATTLE FOR ALGIERS was re-released theatrically in 2003 to great acclaim and reevaluation. Winner of 11 International Film awards.

Battle Of Algiers
A true masterpiece of film making. If anything, the current dreadful situation in Afganistan highlights how nothing has changed since the original release of the movie in 1966. France banned the film for four decades, because it showed their military involved in very extreme methods of brutality that clearly at odds with the public image at the time. At the same time, the Algerian rebels were not afraid to plant bombs in restaurants packed with innocent people. The sight of women using such methods is spine chilling to say the least, because it would many years before the West would have knowledge on such matters . It is unsparing and objective on both rival groups, which is probably why it attracted such hostility by the French critics of the time. If you want to have a copy of one of the most important movies of the last fifty years, buy it right now. You will not be sorry. One final point, a certain well known American director used the soundtrack for his own "Inglourious Basterds".......
