Great Series
This early BBC2 colour documentary series is really enjoyable. Alan Clark gives his overview on the art and culture of Europe and its export to America. It starts with its beginnings with the Greeks and Romans. He takes us to many locations and shows and discusses the art and life of the times with the intellectual influences at work. There is no rush and often times when all is quiet while the camera explores a ceiling, painting or sculpture. There is a great use of music relevant to the time and place being discussed. Also, there is no theme music - he uses music from the era under discussion in that episode. (Putting on the subtitles tells you what the music is!) There is plenty of food for thought with this series. You may not agree with his opinions, but it will stir you to think about art, culture and history - and hopefully make you think and learn lessons for our own times.
