Ghost Stories for Christmas

Ghost Stories for Christmas is a very good collection of the BBC's classic ghost story adaptations and readings by Christopher Lee. It's mainly from the works of M R James but including several from other authors in the same vein. Included in the box set are booklets relating to the production of these films that provide an interesting addendum to the set. It is a shame that the 1980s readings of a number of M R James' stories by Robert Powell have been omitted from this set, but hopefully the BBC will release these one day. In all, it's an almost perfect box set for anyone who loves traditional ghost stories, particularly those of M R James.

Ghost Stories for Christmas

I bought Ghost Stories for Christmas for my daughter, as she had wanted it as a gift. My daughter is really pleased with it.

Traditional Spookiness

Was waiting for this set for a long time. Its an (almost) complete collection of some of the best Ghost stories from Englands Victorian/Edwardian era, in my opinion M R James was the master of this genre and the BBC made these quality episodes with the right amount of love and attention. This collection would be worth a complete 5 stars if only all four episodes of the Christopher Lee Ghost Stories for Christmas series were here but sadly The Ash Tree isnt included for some reason?!! Having said that, its still a great collection and includes other classic episodes including The Signalman by Charles Dickens starring the superb Denholm Elliott. Sit by the fire with a glass of something warming and enjoy...SEASONS CREEPINGS TO YOU ALL!!!!

...Not just for Christmas!

It's great to see all of these BBC classics released as a box set. Although the extras vary from disc to disc and story to story there are some lovely introductions by the director to most of the films contained in this set. There are also a couple of great re-creations of M.R.James telling undergraduates his stories in his study on Christmas Eve (In some places, I found these more affecting than the actual adaptations!) Although atmospheric and beautifully shot and acted, these are not really stories which will make you jump out of your skin. However, they are thought-provoking and sometimes quite creepy. Made on location, they ooze menace through the tight camera work in Norwich cathedral (Stalls of Barchester) or the unsettling sweeps of countryside in stories such as Stigma (Avebury) and A Warning to the Curious (East Anglia) As the nights draw in, now is the perfect time to cuddle up with a drink and tightly-drawn curtains and enjoy these terrific period pieces.
