Only buy to complete the set

From the ridiculous 2 parter which opens this series to the extended "special" which closes it this is by far the worst of the Hi-De-Hi series. Simon Cadell's Geoffrey Fairbrother is much missed here, and Squadron Leader Dempster is a poor replacement. Somehow, in this series he has lost the novelty value his arrival caused in series 6 and he doesn't yet have the appeal of the later series. A strong cast keep this from being a total waste of time, but even favourite characters like Gladys, Ted, Spike and Peggy have little to do with the floundering script and lack of ideas/originality. When a series resorts to dream sequences, or silly plots devised solely for slapstick purposes then it is struggling. Luckily, the final series brought back some of the original magic to make up for this one. Somehow, the time invested in the characters felt worthwhile with a truly bittersweet ending to the whole show. Only buy this series to complete your set, but I guarantee you'll only watch it once.
