Based on the C.S. Forester's classic adventure stories.
Set during the 18th century Napoleonic Wars, Horatio Hornblower (Ioan Gruffudd), a young and shy midshipman, rises through the ranks to become an admiral, braving bloody engagements at sea and close quarter encounters with passionate ladies every bit as tenacious as his treacherous foes.

This box set is great value. If you enjoy a quality BBC production of the adventures of Hornblower this box set will be the answer good sets and acting of high standard with plenty of action , Recimmended
When I think of box sets I normally think of American T.V. shows, you know programmes like Prison Break and Boardwalk Empire but I've got to tell you how much I'm enjoying the digitally remastered complete collection of Hornblower made of course for British T.V. Back in the 1990's. It's bright, it's bold, it's full of swashbuckling adventure and unlike the last time I saw it there's not an advert in sight and I can pause it anytime I want to make a cuppa. Honestly, it's British television at it's best, full of action, intelligent scripts and colourful characters, in short there's something in it for everyone.
This Hornblower Complete Collection was an excellent series when on TV. Digital remastering makes for good quality viewing. Series on DVD as good as I remember. Standard delivery but delivered promptly.
The Hornblower Complete Collection is brilliant.
I wanted to replace all the Hornblower VHS tapes I had, so looked around the internet and found it cheaper here than anywhere else. The DVD box set arrived quickly, looked great, and was in excellent condition. Can't argue with that!
Having seen the Hornblower series when it originally aired on ITV, I'm glad to see that it is just as good watching it all these years later. It's a truly excellent addition to anyone's DVD collection!
Super FAST SERVICE. Just Perfect. I have already made another purchase. Very HAPPY Customer. Have told everyone at work to sendit.com
At the time of writing, only two episodes have been watched, but these were excellent. All parts seem to be well cast and the scenery is first rate. Many recent productions seem to have intrusive, close up camera shots with disjointed scenes and overly loud music. There is none of this with Hornblower. Perhaps the plots may be a considered in the old fashioned category - ripping good yarns - but they make thoroughly good viewing and are strongly recommended for a break from modern offerings.
I loved Hornblower when it was first shown on TV back on the 90's however, despite having watched it a few times I never invested in the box set... until now. The work done to bring this set up to spec has been excellent. I was able to favourable compare this version to any new release DVD's (played on a 40” HD TV and 5.1). I was able to relive the Joy of Hornblowers first command and the horror of the skull and crossbones tattoo (if you’ve seen it you’ll understand) but this time with better sound and visuals than the original broadcast. For those that have not seen Hornblower before (or those of you that haven't read the books (very recommended)) this is one of the best historical drama's ever made. It easily holds its own against the likes of Emma or Sharpe and give a real insight into the life and working of an 18th century man o'war. The adaption of the CS Forester series has been handled extremely well, if you’ve read the books you’ll find some inconsistencies (i.e. Lt Bush) however, they do not jar and in fact given time constraints, each episode is just over 2 hours long, these changes allow for a much more enjoyable experience than would be found if they’d stuck to the letter rather than the spirit of the books. All in All I highly recommend this for any of the following groups of people: 1) History buffs 2) CS Forrester fans 3) Sharpe Fans 4) Historical drama fans 5) Everyone who misses the days (90’s) where TV programs had stories and substance and weren’t reality TV or rehashes of the good programs done in the past.
