When a counterterrorism raid goes tragically wrong, Detective Sergeant Steve Arnott refuses to participate in a cover-up. Ostracised by colleagues, he transfers to an anticorruption unit, AC-12, that’s in the process of investigating one of the Force’s most respected officers, Detective Chief Inspector Tony Gates. Arnott and Gates become embroiled in a game of cat-and-mouse. Every time Gates seems cornered, he finds a way to turn the tables still believing he can save himself, if only he can prove his innocence. But all the time he’s digging a bigger hole and plunging irrevocably into a moral abyss. And the stakes keep getting higher. Soon it isn’t just careers on the line – it’s lives.
When a top secret police convoy is ambushed police officers are killed and a protected witness is seriously injured the sole surviving police officer is DI Lindsay Denton (Keeley Hawes). Convinced of an inside job the case is assigned to AC-12. DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compson), DC Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) and Superintendent Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) are joined by DC Georgia Trotman (Jessica Raine) and as twists and turns abound the team become increasingly suspicious that their most valuable witness could be their prime suspect.
When AC-12 are called in, DS Steve Arnott (Martin Compston) clashes with Danny, and it’s left to DC Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure) to investigate undercover. As the inquiry intensifies, Supt. Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) begins to suspect the case is linked to AC-12’s past and a possible traitor in their midst.
