Lucas Bell ( Simon Gipps-Kent) is a lonely boy who lives with his wicked guardian Sir Randolph Murgatroyd (William Squire) in the crumbling mansion of midnight court. On the Eve of his thirteenth birthday, a mysterious stranger arrives. Anne-Marie (Maxine Gordan) is a young and wilful French girl with a hidden and secretive past. All Lucas knows is that she is somehow connected to midnight mill, the nightmarish carpet factory from which his guardian derives his income.
As the mystery deepens, Sir Randolph is killed in a devastating blaze at the mansion - and the two youngsters suddenly find themselves homeless and destitute.
Now, they are forced to seek a living in the harsh factory town of blastburn, sheltering on its desolate streets and taking refuge in its dank, dark sewers. As they struggle to survive, they also try to solve the mystery of Sir Randolph Murgatroyd and uncover the dark secrets of midnight mill.
