Meet The Joestars

Serialised in Shueisha’s magazine the Weekly Shōnen Jump (1987–2004) and later Ultra Jump (2005), JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is a manga series created by Hirohiko Araki, who took on the parts of both writer and illustrator. Following multiple protagonists, each adopting the ‘JoJo’ moniker, the story is divided into eight story arcs and is one of the longest ongoing manga series ever written.

Over the years, there have been various film and TV adaptations based on the different narrative parts: Stardust Crusaders, Phantom Blood, Battle Tendency, Golden Wind, and more. Many of these have been anime interpretations; however, a live-action film following the plot of Diamond Is Unbreakable released in 2017.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is based in a world much like our own, but it also includes various supernatural elements. A limited number of people are capable of harnessing their spiritual power to create a Stand, a physical entity with immense powers. Some can also use a martial-arts technique called a Hamon, which allows bodily energy to be converted into sunlight.

Narratively, the series centres around members of the Joestar family. They all share in common the ability to shorten their name to ‘JoJo’ and a distinctive birth mark shaped like a star above their left shoulder blade. The story focuses its first six arcs on the conflict between Dio Brando and Jonathan Joestar, a conflict that spans over generations. On the other hand, the remaining two parts take a different approach, shifting the focus to an alternative universe.
