A Hero Of The Clone Wars

Played by actor Alec Guinness, the character — going by the name of ‘Old Ben’ Kenobi — first appeared in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977), a critically acclaimed film directed by George Lucas. In the narrative, he fills the role of mentor to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), who finds himself caught in the midst of a galactical civil war after he uncovers a secret message recorded by Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher). This message pleas for the assistance of the former Jedi Knight, asking him to take the plans for a planet-destroying super weapon, the Death Star, to Alderaan. Despite his initial hesitance to accompany the aging Jedi, Luke is compelled to abandon his simple life as a Tatooine moisture farmer when he finds the corpses of his aunt and uncle, both of whom were killed by the Galactic Empire’s stormtroopers.

Following a later encounter with Darth Vader (David Prowse / James Earl Jones), Kenobi loses his life and becomes a Force ghost. The remainder of the original trilogy features the character in a passive role, his spectral presence offering guidance to the young Skywalker. Nevertheless, fans were given the chance to learn more about the Jedi’s history with the release of the prequel trilogy, which shows his evolution from Padawan of Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) to teacher of the Chosen One, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen).

The gap between the two trilogies was explored in his self-titled Disney+ TV series, which picks up after the destruction of the Jedi Order, a near-genocidal purge committed during the infamous Order 66. Kenobi, one of the few survivors, has been charged with protecting Luke — the son of Anakin, now transformed into Darth Vader — on the planet Tatooine. Despite trying to maintain a low profile, he is unwittingly drawn into conflict, coerced by the arrival of the Inquisitors, Force-sensitive agents of the Imperials.
