Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition

Is Borderlands a FPS? Is it an RPG? The answer is: YES to both questions. It takes the best of both worlds and adds its own style to it. The playability is great, the only negative about it might be the in-game menus which may confuse you with the tons of options and variety you find in the game. The aesthetic is wonderful, there are a few glitches in this subject, e.g., the shadows and some rendering textures, but the overall is a wonderful visual experience. The AI is not the best you might find around, but that's not a big issue. I recommend this game if you loved looting items in beloved Diablo, if you enjoyed playing Co-op in Left 4 dead and if you liked the graphics of Team Fortress/Zelda: the Wind Waker. I haven't tried the DLCs included in this Game Of The Year Edition, but they seemed to include more variety to the game.

"Ain't no rest for the wicked"

Borderlands is a freak. This is a very good thing. By “freak”, I refer to the genre-bending of a first-person shooter crossed with a role-playing game. Borderlands is probably the most underrated game of the current generation of games. It was a sleeper hit back in 2009 and the frenetic, cartoon carnage deserves all of the recognition it gets. The game takes place on the desolate planet of Pandora (trust me, it is nothing like the Avatar homeworld). Four characters hear rumours of unfathomable treasure deep within a vault on Pandora; a vault that only opens every 200 years. The Vault is about to open....but what is truly inside? Each of the four characters (Roland the Solider, Lilith the Siren, Brick the Berserker and Mordecai the Hunter) have their own unique abilities and play very differently from each other. Thankfully, although each character specialises in different weaponry, you can use whatever weapons you want - you just may not have the abilities to improve them as much. The supporting cast are charming, especially Claptrap the friendly yet annoying robot, and Scooter the inbred owner of the catch-a-ride travel system. Of course, though, the true star of the show is the gameplay. Mass gunfights feel like both a guns blazing, FPS warzone and a tactical RPG battle. The cel-shaded graphics give a wonderful artsy stylisation to the guns and enemies, replacing the turgid, brown/black mercs from most FPS snore-fests. The Psycho (see the game cover) is a particular highlight, often setting himself on fire and launching himself towards you. The statistical aspect is also very addictive – collecting guns, comparing their stats and making choices between range, power, and speed (and that’s just for starters – there are elemental weapons too) is like a game within itself and promotes the feeling of “one more go” in order to find a better weapon. The guns number is in the “gajillions” (their words, not mine), the humour is great, and the RPG elements of skill trees, loot collecting, etc. are insanely addictive. I was genuinely disheartened when reaching the maximum rank and completing the 20-30 hour game. It just wasn’t enough. Cue the amazing Game of the Year edition, with not one, but four DLC packs. Adding a good few hours each, each DLC pack was lauded on release as brilliant additions to the main game. Although the DLC packs are all available on the Playsation Store (or Xbox Live if you use a 360 Marketplace), until recently, each pack was around £8 but the Game of the Year edition provides the original game and all 4 DLC packs for a ridiculously low price. Borderlands is pretty, violent, addictive, magnetising, and most importantly, a bargain. With the sequel out in September, you owe it to yourself to own this. Buy it now, thank me later. CATCH-A-RIDE!

Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition

Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition is a brilliant 1st person shooter and role play combination. If you enjoy roaming around taking on missions when you like, then this is the game for you, If you like FarCry2 or Fallout 3 (borderlands is not so heavy duty), but still highly recommended it to anyone.

    Shoot'm up freenzy

Borderlands is a good, fun and frenetic FPS. It doesn't have the solid background of the giants of the genre, but has it's strong points. It's a fast paced action FPS, you don't have to use stealth or military strategy, just choose a character and get ready to shoot galactic scam and blow up stuff. It might get a bit repetitive, but you'll get your money's worth for sure. Good ol' clean fun.

Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition

Borderlands turned out to be better than expected. The storyline is good, and the game's graphics are amazing. I also like how the player can choose different characters to correspond with the game play.

    Stunningly addictive!

Combining FPS action with RPG elements, Borderlands is a nice Role Playing Shooter that pits you in the ravaged planet Pandora with an interesting storyline, four characters with different abilities and hours of exploration ahead. If that's not enough, being the Game of the Year Edition, it includes the four DLC expansions for more endless fun. If you like Fallout 3 and such, you just can't go wrong with Borderlands and for this bargain price it's a must have in any PS3 library!

    5 STAR!

After waiting 3 weeks from when I first ordered it finally arrived yesterday but it was worth the wait! Original game plus the 4 DLC's for under £18..... BARGAIN! It only took me a few hours to download the 4 add ons and I was up and running. It is such a huge game itself even before the DLC's so will get extra hours of game play out of it (to my girlfriends delight!). The graphics are amazing, voiceovers are funny and the music is pretty catchy. Well worth the buy for under £18!
