Dark Souls is the critically acclaimed spiritual successor to the game Demon Souls, which was released in 2009. An incredibly innovative role playing game, Dark Souls provides a completely unique concept few would dare to try to create, and makes for a once in a lifetime game playing experience. This ground breaking game has perfectly balanced intricate storyline with breath taking graphics and heart racing action, amounting to something that can be enjoyed by all. However, Dark Souls is not for the faint hearted...
Endure spine chilling and tensely hostile environments as you travel though this vast and unwelcoming open world, a world that is home to a host of terrifying creatures and demons that want nothing more than to eviscerate you. Explore this twisted fantasy universe and trawl through dungeons, with both your wits and strength being constantly put to the test in this brutally dark and challenging third person RPG.
You can choose from a wide and detailed variety of ten races for your character, including warrior, cleric, thief, sorcerer, hunter, and more. Each of these races have their own specialised skills, for example melee or magic, with upgrades to achieve and apply as you progress throughout the game, allowing you to truly tailor your character to your specifications. This game adds an additional feature when it comes to armour and weaponry, allowing you to forge them yourself should you not want to buy or scavenge for them. An extra twist is also presented, making death the main focus of the entire game play. This isn't always a bad thing though; dying is your education, and the theme of the cruel universe through which you trek. Within this punishing world, survival will be your utmost accomplishment, and your most impressive victory.
The beauty about the combat in Dark Souls is that it will never truly pin you to a certain playing style; you can switch from a heavy warrior to a swift thief just by changing up your weapons and armour, and you can even become a mage or a healer by finding a sorcerer's catalyst or talisman, allowing you to be constantly fluid in your combat. Another interesting little twist in this game is the way that the bonfires you'll find placed around the world are checkpoints, where you can repair your items, refill your health flasks, and ensure it to be a respawn point should you die. Another thing you can do at a bonfire is spend the souls of your vanquished foes, which act as this game's currency, and which can be spent on levelling up, increasing your health, stamina, and magical abilities.
There is also a definitive online co-op multiplayer experience within Dark Souls, which has you relying on other individuals throughout the game to share tips, strategies, and various knowledge to help you progress. You will be able to see the shadows of other players as they in turn trek through this vast, cruel world, and even the blood stains of where they have been smite. When you die, you will leave your own blood stain and become Hollowed, losing all souls that you have collected. However, should you make it back to your stain before being decimated again, you will regain everything that you had lost. Another resource you will be relying on throughout this game is your Humanity, gained only through items and by defeating horrendous and terrifying bosses, which can be used to light your own bonfires and revive yourself to Human.
This incredibly imaginative game will transport you through this punishing universe, allowing you to write your own destiny, pulling you ever deeper with each victory, and completely immersing yourself in the darkness. Whether you come out alive is up to you. (Cat Emerson)

Dark Souls is a great Game - it's nice to get a game that isn't too easy, so many Xbox 360 games are just too simple that you can complete in a matter of days - this one is different. It can take days just to get through various stages. This could perjaps be annoying for some gamers who like quick results but personally I find this quite refreshing.

Sweeeet!
Best RPG of 2011, period. The combat is hardcore difficult, so I don't recommend it for those interested in a walk in the park, but the controls are tight, the enemies varying and the items, skills and factions remind me of old-school games. A success!

One of the best beat 'em' all I ever played! Like Demon Soul, it's hard, but not too much, frightening, but not too much, monstrous, but not too much. The game offers real sensations right from the beginning of the game. Universe is developed, monsters are varied. I highly recommend this game; it offers hours and hours of pure pleasure!

Hardcore again!!
Are you fan of role playing games? Are you bored of games you beat with minimal effort? Do you want a game which will provide you with challenge, like the good old days? If you answer these three questions with a yes then Dark souls is a game for you. The biggest achievement of this game is that fact that it combines the elements of a modern game with the old school difficulty settings. You will die a lot to find the right answers but every battle you win, every step at the right direction is something you can feel proud about it. This game is for all those hardcore gamers out there. If you want something more friendly pick Skyrim. If you want hell on your console get dark souls. Don't miss it!

Dark Souls a bright light in gameplay
Being told by my friends and most of the intertubes that Dark Souls is "punishing" and "you die a lot" made me a little reticent to try it as I'm not a hardcore gamer, but the raving about the satisfaction and recent price drops tipped me over the edge. I was not disappointed. The open world structure and need for concentration and skill really appeals. Glances of upcoming, huge bosses throughout the game inspire and terrify. My favourite on the Xbox so far.

Best Action RPG of 2011
Dark Souls is challenging and rewarding, able to give the player a huge sense of accomplishment. You don't believe me? Come back after you've managed to beat down a boss after being brutally murdered 15 times. Dark Souls is unforgiving with its players; if you make a mistake, the game makes sure you pay for it, with interest. In order to survive you need to stay focused, observe your enemies movements, and react quickly to them. This also leaves room for countless strategies to be utilised for each enemy (or group of enemies). The game also entangles you with the mystery of its lore, and the vastness of its world. Different from many modern games, Dark Souls doesn't spew out everything to the player, instead it's up to him/her to look for clues and discover the game's background. Each new area adds a piece to the puzzle and that only makes the game more and more interesting. Dark Souls is a rare pearl in the modern gaming industry filled with FPS games and bad RPG wannabes who can only recycle the same clichés over and over. It is definitely a must have for any hardcore RPG fan.

Dark Souls Xbox 360
The cover of Dark Souls says "Prepare To Die"... Prepare to die indeed! They are not wrong. The difference with this game is that somehow they've made it so you expect to die, and when you don't you think either you're a genius or it's a mistake. When you do die it goes beyond personal!! Every time you win any battle you can't wait for the next one. Trust me.... Wait!! Excellent game and amazing graphics. Well worth the challenge.

It hurts so good
"It hurts so good", these are the words used by my boyfriend to describe his experience. He cannot put the game down, constantly going to sleep at 6am only to get back up and play some more. I should not have bought him this game, it is far too good an experience. Ps he wouldn't die so much if he listened to my directions.

Caution is key
If you're tired of this generation's easy games(I know I am) then this is for you. Dark Souls offers what every other RPG out there have but more. You simply cannot just button mash yourself through this game. You have to play with caution and study the enemies movement and attack pattern to survive.

PREPARE TO DIE
Dark Souls is the spiritual successor to Demon's Souls, which is probably the most difficult game I've ever played. It's a third person action RPG that is both epic and beautiful, with a wonderfully crafted world that offers players a heavy challenge from the outset. The combat is fluid and never feels cumbersome, and offers a great deal of scope for different styles of play. Even the first enemy you meet can kill you, and death is never far away. When you do die, and you will, FREQUENTLY, any soul power (the currency for both levelling up and buying stuff) isn't lost and you have a chance to retrieve it. That is if you can make it back to your body before you die again. It makes you genuinely careful about your progress, and you never run into an area with your sword arm swinging. Add to this an interesting story, and online features that allows other players to be summoned to your world to help, or to invade your world to kill you, and you've got a really great game that you'll happily spend hours dying in. I'm about 50 hours into my first playthrough, and I'll definitely play through it again. This is probably my pick for game of the year, last year.

Brilliant game!
Dark Souls is incredibly difficult and at times frustrating, but a game with some real challenge is a breath of fresh air when nowadays you can win almost any game by mashing your controller against your face. Do not play this game if you want a stroll through the park!

Essential Game
Dark Souls is without a doubt the most important game to have come out on consoles in the last 10 years. An unforgiving beast of a game where the player is constantly forced to make tough decisions about when to save their game. This game is the definitive RPG and everything Skyrim and the like wish they could be. No endless walking around, no time consuming cut scenes, just pure nail biting tension and the boss battles will take your breath away.

Dark's Souls
Prepare to enter a world dominated by darkness. Your only friends will be your shield and your blade. Chaos and darkness surround you: are you ready to survive? Are you ready to die? Dark Souls, despite being produced in Japan, looks like a very western RPG. Character customization is complete, and the player chooses which and how many skills to improve. Many find Dark Souls extremely difficult, as it doesn't forgive the mistakes players make through insufficient planning. But I can assure you that you will want to try again and again. There is not a great deal of dialogue but apart from this minor flaw it offers a great combat system, epic battles with huge bosses and truly unforgettable atmosphere.

Enter a beautiful world of horror and despair
I was somewhat afraid of Dark Souls since it's known for its harsh difficulty. After playing it for many hours I must say that is difficult but fair. In most cases you alone are responsible for your death. If you get too cunning or sloppy even the most harmless enemies will rip you apart. Dark Souls is a very atmospheric game. Like in a good survival horror game you'll always have feelings of constant danger looming above you. It's hard, but it's rewarding. It's scary and creepy but also has moments of sublime beauty. The characters you meet often have a tragic story tell. Dark Souls definitely isn't a game for everyone. But RPG-fans and gamers who like Survival Horror should really give it a try.

Old school? Yes. Overly difficult? No.
A throwback to old school gaming, Dark Souls forces you to learn from your mistakes, memorise attack patterns and punishes user error. A wonderful experience in comparison to the hand holding in most games of today. The game requires 100% focus and concentration and as such you may miss the environment and how cleverly crafted it is. Once you start moving from area to area you realise what a work of genius this is. This game has the best combat system of any video game I have ever played, you start feebly under powered but later on when you are swinging a flaming sword at your enemies, and blocking attacks with a massive shield you feel like you could take anyone on. While it may not be for everyone, I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a challenge.

Amazingly hard... but amazingly good :)
Get ready to die. A lot! But what a pleasure to finally kick the ass of that giant dragon or the black knight, with the help of fellow adventurers online. This game is very challenging, probably one of the most difficult I've played in the last 15 years. However, everytime you defeat a boss, you will feel really proud of yourself. The online part is very well thought and very useful. Just be careful as some people might give you wrong information to trap you or to get you to die one more time. Definitely a must have. A very demanding, tough game, but it is worth it. And guess what. Once you are done with it, you can start the adventure again, but with even stronger enemies.

Dark Souls
This game is difficult but persistence apparently will help. I've still to experience this unfortunately but the game keeps dragging me back! The online mode is different with people either invading to kill you, leaving helpful or sometimes unhelpful messages on the ground, or they come in and help you with some of the more difficult enemies. You can of course do the same to other players. There's no easy road in this game and no pauses, apart from at bonfires where all the smaller enemies you meet respawn to make your life even more difficult. Still, highly recommended.

Best RPG - 2011
Dark Souls is the best RPG of 2011. It is a hard game to beat, offering many hours of fun in which you can discover the world of souls. Be warned, if you are to complete Dark Souls you will have to be strong enough and spend many hours trying. The game has a big open world packed full of secrets to discover and the graphics have been improved by some blur effects, which make it even more beautiful.

What a Game !!
This game is amazing, very addictive and worth every penny. At first I did not enjoy it, it is challenging, died a lot but for some reason I never give up, the difficulty does not seem to put you off, I learnt the way you are supposed to play the game, defending, attacking, magic etc, now I cant put this game down. I Recommend it to anyone that wants a challenging open world game!

Death death death
Awesome game but only play it if you have PATIENCE. You will DIE, and you will die A LOT. It's a game of timing & tactics, make one mistake and you will be watching the deaths screen again. One of the best RPGs on the xbox though, very rewarding when you reach new areas & beat the bosses. CO-OP can be frustrating but once you learn how it works it's actually very good. Don't buy this game solely for a co-op experience, it doesn't work that way. You CAN play the whole game together but as soon as one of you dies, you respawn in your own world and have to go through the tedius process of spawning each other again. It's best to play it mostly on your own and just summon your friends when you reach hard parts/bosses.

Dark Souls
Dark Souls is very fun and has a very distinct feel. It's not anywhere near as hard as it is made out to be, however but still quite hard by today's standards. I would recommend Dark Souls to anyone who likes the old days when you discovered how to finish a game yourself rather than having your hand held.

What games should be like
Dark Sould should be made mandatory for everyone to play. It has amazing depth; every enemy encounter requires strict attention or you will suffer, but there's many ways to approach any situation. Remember that feeling of awe you got from Shadow of the Colossus? You never know when a seemingly insurmountable foe is going to present itself. And it never becomes frustrating. Enemy patterns can be learnt so that you only have yourself to blame when you die for the thousandth time. Gaming bliss.

Pure RPG
Dark Souls is a medieval dark fantasy role playing from FROM Software, a spiritual successor of the game Demon's Souls. The story itself is very minimalistic, but the art work, voice acting and game mechanics are perfect, turning this game into an absolutely pleasure playing it. At first I was a little afraid of the minimalistic story, since i'm a fan of great story, but this game is the first to change my mind, everything is so well made that you just want to explore this huge open world and face the challenges. This game is Hard, very hard, but not unfair, you need to use strategic play and patience to overcome some obstacles. In fact, the game does a very good job introducing you in this game style. Some reviews categorize this game as a hardcore rpg game, and I can't agreed more. Is not because is hard, but because there's a lot to learn about weapons, armors, items, reinforce weapons and armors, change the property of basic weapons, etc. you will need to study the game. One amazing feature os this game is the online experience, you are always online, you see other players resting in bonfires, passing by you in form of phantoms. For example, when someone reach one of the bells in the game you can hear is triumph ringing the bell, just amazing, and this is just the simple part of the online feature. This game for me deserves a 9,5 out of 10, just because sometimes there's some framerate issues that are noticeable but don't ruin the experience.

Prepare to die, again and again
Dark Souls is hard and not for the faint hearted. RPG fans will be well served, design your character choosing class and starting object, then launch yourself into the hardest most fist pumping satisfying game of 2011. The first thing to accept is that you will die, this however is not all bad the levelling system works by giving you souls for everything you kill. When you die these souls are lost however if you can get back to where you died you get all your souls back, providing you can fight your way back through the re-spawned enemies. These souls are also the currency so, do you level up or buy that shiny new sword, or spell. I highly recommend this game.
