Reinventing Rock

Joining the American rock music scene in 1961, the Beach Boys were formed in Hawthorne, California. The group originally comprised brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and friend Al Jardine.

Following their debut, the Beach Boys shot to prominence thanks to their innovative music style, combining 1950s rock and roll, black R&B, and older pop vocal groups – with elements of classical and jazz elements. This was accompanied by vocal harmonies and adolescent themes, setting them apart from other bands of the period.

Managed by the Wilson’s father, Murry, and composed by Brian, their first hit came with the 1963 single ‘Surfin’ U.S.A.’, which led to many more top-ten singles that would come to be known as ‘California sound’, drawing on southern California youth culture.

During the British Invasion, they managed to retain their wide commercial appeal, releasing the Pet Sounds album and ‘Good Vibrations’ single.

Following the passing of Dennis and Carl, Love was given legal rights to tour using the band’s name. Although they do not perform alongside him, both Brian and Jardine remain official members of the group.

With over 100 million records sold worldwide, the Beach Boys are regarded as one of the most commercially successful bands of all time. Their influence on the music industry cannot be understated, legitimising pop music and driving the development of various modern genres. Across their career, the group had 36 songs reach the US Top 40, a feat unmatched by any other American band.
