This AVPR Steelbook in Particular

For the movie itself, Jindus' review pretty much hits the nail on the head...I would also add that whilst AVP definitely serves the Alien/s fans more, AVPR serves the Predator fans more, therefore the best (and arguably only) reason to watch AVPR is for the Pred of the show, Wolf, who has insanely more character than the humans! Anyway, as for the steelbook itself, I watched straight after AVP and whilst I was surprised the first movie had the unrated cut (with more blood and nearly every deleted scene reinserted), it made this copy of AVPR all that more frustrating, because the extended version isn't even on it! My DVD has the extended version and was really looking forward to this marginally superior cut of the movie on blu-ray! It's weird not to have both cuts available, so anyone looking forward to the extended cut...this steelbook is a disappointment. The deleted scenes are thankfully on the disc, but they were there on the DVD too...kind of a waste of a blu-ray in that regard... Having said that, the upscaling transfer physically makes it easier to watch because it's brighter...only by a smidge, but a little bit brighter. Oh and Zavvi, whilst a brilliant company, you need to put details of the special features in the Blu-ray descriptions...! AM

Guilty pleasure

AvP R is the sequel to, funnily enough, AvP and is set in the immediate aftermath of the first movie. A terrifying new xenomorph emerges aboard a Predator ship departing earth, chaos ensues and the ship crashes into small town U.S.A, y'know the one with stereotypical white picket fences and friendly town folks. In short order, the new xenomorph spawns a small army that threatens not only the town but possibly the entire U.S. Fortunately, or unfortunately as the case may be, a Predator named Wolf is aware of the terrible events unfolding and sets out on a mission to contain and neutralise the growing alien threat. Well, the first AvP at least had some semblance of a story underpinning it, yes the characters were hit and miss, but the concept was sound. AvP R appears to take the style over substance approach, there is very little plot, all the characters can be referred to in simple terms such as military veteran, family man, stroppy teenager etc and there is even less attempt than in AvP to flesh them out so when they inevitably meet a horrible end you just don't care. This is a more grown up movie than AvP in the sense that there is violence and plenty of gore, but the levels just seem over the top. Yes there was violence and gore in the Aliens and Predator franchises, but this was generally to further plot and increase tension, here is just seems like a laugh to make a teenager's head explode! There is also a sequence in a maternity ward that feels like it was a step too far. Don't get me wrong the action is delivered thick, fast and is generally well executed, it just feels like a road to nowhere. The effects are excellent and both the Alien and Predator look superb. As a movie, this falls into the guilty pleasure category, a film that isn't great but you tend to dig it out from time to time when you just want to watch some aliens reduce people into wet chunks! Sadly AvP R like its predecessor could have been much more, even more tragic is the fact that AvP R also killed off the franchise.

AvP Requiem Steelbook

I'm a big fan of steel books and this was a great movie to my collection. I'm a fan of the alien movies and the predator movies and I thought Requiem is a great part of the series. The steel book itself has beautiful artwork and would recommend it to any still book collectors. I live in the United States, ordered the steel book from zavvi.com and I got it with in a couple of weeks. Their shipping is fast and the steelbook was in perfect condition. I highly recommend zavvi.com.
