Going to Town

This is a superbly thought out film and great acting from the protagonists.

An incredible second film from Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck's second feature, The Town, was far and away one of my Top Three Films of 2010. Such a prominent position in a year full of fantastic films is easy to justify; from the moment the film begins, it is quite simply perfect. After his directorial debut in Gone Baby Gone back in 2007, Affleck shows no signs of losing his substantial talent as a director with his second outing. The Town is one of the best and most creative heist movies in recent years, with outstanding performances from all the cast, with an impressive delivery of what is nothing short of a brilliant script. Not only does Affleck take the helm for this film, but he also takes the leading role too, a part that he plays immensely well. We forget that we're watching a film and he and his supporting cast truly draw us into the world of Charlestown, Boston, USA and the crime-ridden one-square-mile town in which the film takes place. The film also features one of the last performances from the late Pete Postlethwaite as the town's crime boss, as well as earning Jeremy Renner a nomination at Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor for a particularly impressive performance as one of Affleck's friends and partners-in-crime. It seems clear that Affleck has no intention of letting either his acting or directing talents go to waste, and The Town is an utterly tense, exceptional combination of both these talents; it is certainly not a film to be missed.

The City

Ben Affleck does a great job behind the camera and a good one in front of it. The movie is fast paced with great actors, Jeremy Renner as Jem, Jon Hamm as F.B.I. Agent Adam Frawley, Titus Welliver as Dino Ciampa, and Blake Lively really give great performances, but the use of Boston itself is a great supporting part of the movie, the cityscape,Fenway Park, neighborhoods and even narrow roads make the movie standout. It has twist and turns throughout and the cat and mouse game between the robbers and the F.B.I. is top notch. It is over two hours long, so sit down and enjoy it.
