Great flick

An overall great movie. Not a masterpiece, but a beautifully photographed, really moving true story with solid performances. Recommended!

good debut in directing

This epic drama, a true story is straight forward worked-out by Angelina Jolie, if I'm not wrong she was competing with Brad Pitt (Fury) for an oscar winning movie. It misses some depth and I think a lot more could have been done with this movie. But overall not bad and worthwhile watching. And again: a good price.

Strength of spirit wins the race

Putting Angelina 'Tomb Raider' Jolie in the director's chair I would have thought as a gamble by the studios but she does a terrific job with this true story about Louis, a troubled young man who finds he has a talent to run. Trained by his older brother, Louis (played wonderfully by Jack O'Connell), eventually represents his country at the 1936 Munich Olympics in front of Hitler. When the war breaks out, he joins the Air Force as a bombardier. After a near fatal crash into the ocean, Louis is adrift with two colleagues for over forty days until he his pick up by the Japanese and sent to a prisoner of war camp. There he meets the camp commandant who also ran in the Olympics but was beat by the american. Hatred fuels revenge as the commandant beats and humiliates the american. Sometimes this movie is hard to watch, especially some of the beatings. However, I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The scenes adrift in the ocean seem to go on for ages though but the pace soon pick up once the main character was interned in the camps. The hard thing to get over was that this is based on a true story but the handling of it by Miss Jolie is expertly done with fine performances by the main cast, especially Mr O'Connell. Well worth a watch if you like true stories or well acted dramas.
