In the first series, it is the day of the California Presidential elections and counter-terrorist agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) is trying to prevent the assassination of top candidate David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert). However, a traitor amongst Jack's colleagues manages to hamper his progress, and the agent soon finds that he has been framed for the assassination himself. Meanwhile, Jack's teenaged daughter Kim goes missing and his ex-wife puts herself in grave danger when she goes looking for her. The second series begins over a year later, with Palmer, newly elected to the Oval Office, calling upon Jack to find a terrorist nuclear bomb in Los Angeles. Again, however, Jack's task is complicated when Kim is forced to go on the run from her abusive employer. In both series the action takes place over 24 hours, with each episode representing one hour of actual time.
