If you like weepies...
I'll try to be positive. There's some good photography here, some nicely composed shots and use of colour. Umm, what else? The Mexican family are a likeable bunch. Can't think of much else nice to say - except that, looking at reviews of this film elsewhere, it's clear that many people have loved it. And it has been shown in several film festivals (all in North America) and even won an award. Perhaps it's just a matter of taste. This is the kind of movie where if someone is distressed, they tell you how they're feeling and why in a long, anguished soliloquy, tear-stained face in big close-up. I simply don't believe people do that in real life, not even in New York. For me, a good director with good actors can convey emotions just by the way people behave. But you might love Bella. It's a weepy love story with which youre supposed to have a lump in your throat regularly throughout the film and at the end. I didn't, but maybe you will. And if you decide to try it, bear in mind that a lot of the plot is in flashback, which can be confusing.
