SOUTH EAST: The steam railways South of the River Thames and East of Southampton have left us as their legacy one of the richest veins of preserved steam in Great Britain today. The railways of the area have, unlike their Northern cousins, always had the carriage of passengers as their top priority and the diversity of locomotives and the routes covered is immense. This DVD filmed over the last decade, captures this variety, from heavy express locomotives to small shunting engines including many notable visitors to the area. On private lines and those of what was the Southern Railway, from Hampshire through Surrey, Middlesex, Sussex and Kent join us as we revel in all of the magic of Steam in Britain in the South East. NORTH & EAST MIDLANDS: The North and East Midlands area of Great Britain has a proud industrial history, much of which is bound up in the history of the railways of the country. Situated in the heart of the North and East Midlands is one of the country s greatest coalfields, the very lifeblood of the steam railway. Many famous companies served the area, notably the London and North Western Railway, the Great Central Railway and the Midland Railway. Today many of their steam locomotives can still be seen hard at work on both the preserved railways and the main lines of the Midlands as the great railway preservation movement has striven to keep their memories alive. The measure of their success can be seen in this programme. G.W.R LINES: The Great Western Railway s publicity machine was on of the most effective railway promotional organisations ever. Long after the GWR had ceased to exist it continued its pull on the imagination of both enthusiast and general traveller alike, ensuring that much of the system has seen its magnificent Brunswick Green locomotives, from Pannier tanks to Kings, continue to work throughout the last decade. Today it is possible to travel over almost the whole of the Great Western Railway with a great variety of its original locomotives. So, using footage selected from ten years of dedicated observation, this DVD takes you on such a journey, to savour Steam in Britain on GWR Lines.
