A Worthwhile Revival

If you’re contemplating purchasing this set the chances are that you’ve either got fond memories from when the series was last broadcast on afternoon TV many years ago or are just interested in the byways of British cinema. Either way you will find much of interest here in this well presented and definitive set which also comes with five extra films which were not part of the original series but were made by the same production company and often bundled with them on general release . With plenty of contributing writers, directors and composers every film is different and given the constraints involved in making these films quickly and on a tight budget the results are surprisingly intriguing and entertaining. With less than an hour to play with the stories are usually well-paced too, something which they have in common with many great RKO-made crime dramas and a contrast to many films made today where the need to make every scene and shot count is so often forgotten. Apart from two actors who appear in the same roles in four episodes there are no consistent characters, although a number of actors appear more than once. This not only adds to the variety but allows spotting those who went on to greater things and also some who perhaps should have done so. There are well-known British film and television names of the day in every feature and the visual and audio quality is in the main excellent. Divided into seven volumes, each is accompanied by a booklet well illustrated with posters and stills with an essay running from one volume to the next and each inner sleeve also contains information on the films in that volume. My only criticisms are of a minor nature. If each synopsis had been reproduced larger and the posters smaller both would have been possible to read rather than just the latter and the box is not really substantial enough for the seven cases. However, these are minor niggles and will not impair the enjoyment of these films one little bit.

The Edgar Wallace Anthology

If you like looking back in time with the nostalgic fond memories, them you'll love these DVDs. I watched these on TV as a young kid in the 60's, I forgot all about these films until recently. I'm so glad I purchased these and what a good deal from Zavvi. Many thanks.
