A complete delight
Having read and heard such a lot of good things about this film, I was really looking forward to watching it. Whilst I did have reservations about Ray Winstone in the role of a South African Boar War veteran, they were put to rest within minutes, as he is completely tremendous in the part and it's an inspired piece of casting. To my mind, it's his best piece of acting to date. All of the actors play their parts very well and the pace of the film is set just right. I really found myself caring about the characters and what they were going through. The plot is incredibly gripping and moving and kept me on the edge of my seat, right until the closing titles. A constant feature in this film is the absolutely beautiful backdrop of the New Zealand scenery. The cinematography is first class and the musical score is very stirring, too. I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending this to anyone and it's without doubt the most enjoyable and rewarding film I've seen in many years. Five stars.
