VIKINGS - JOURNEY TO THE NEW WORLD DVD: They came from the North and soon legends said that they did not know fear. They sailed icy oceans and narrow rivers, striking far inland, without warning, without mercy. For hundreds of years, they were another name for terror. However, the truth about the Vikings is far more complex. Much of Europe s traditions, technology and institutions come to us from these fierce men of the North. Shot on location in Iceland, Greenland, and Newfoundland, this breathtaking IMAX film joins the Viking warriors, explorers and settlers as they set out in search of new lands. The North Atlantic Sagas come to life as we follow Eric the Red and his son Leif Ericsson, first to Greenland and then on to North America. State-of-the-art digital graphics dramatically illustrate the unique shipbuilding techniques that were the key to propelling the Vikings across the Atlantic and into history. LITTLE BOOK OF VIKINGS: The Vikings were savage raiders and ruthless adventurers whose grip of terror on much of western Europe endured from the eighth to the 11th centuries. Or were they? They brought pillage, rape and wanton destruction to every shore their dreaded longboats could reach. Or did they? It s true that these seafaring peoples from Norway, Sweden and Denmark spread out from their homelands in search of new societies with which to trade and new places to settle. It s true that Vikings raided many a terrified community and left a fearsome reputation in their wake. It s true that the phrase going on a viking came to mean taking part in a piratical expedition. But there is much more to the Vikings than the popular image portrays. They ventured much further than is usually thought, establishing trade connections as far from Scandinavia as Istanbul and Newfoundland, perhaps even the Far East. They took with them new ways of life and new aspects of culture. Vikings well known to British readers include King Cnut and even William the Conqueror.
