The Progenitor Of Computer Animation

A subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios, Pixar Animation Studios finds its roots in the ’70s. During this time, the small division, which operated under the banner of Lucasfilm, was called the Graphics Group. In 1986, the team became an independent corporation, and it officially adopted the name Pixar, a title derived from their proprietary digital-compositing computer.

Unfortunately, technological limitations prevented the company from pushing forwards with the development of animated movies, which was their primary focus; however, the team’s patience was rewarded when Disney proposed a three-picture deal. The first product of this deal was Toy Story (1995), a ground-breaking computer-animated film about a group of toys — including Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) — that come to life in the absence of humans. Achieving massive critical and commercial success, the movie paved the way for the release of further sequels and standalone projects.

Today, the studio’s credits include releases such as A Bug’s Life (1998), Monsters, Inc. (2001), Finding Nemo (2003), The Incredibles (2004), Cars (2006), Ratatouille (2007), WALL-E (2008), Up (2009), Brave (2012), Inside Out (2015), The Good Dinosaur (2015), Coco (2017), Onward (2020), Soul (2020), and Luca (2021) — amongst others.
