We’re Going On An Adventure

The Hobbit trilogy of films — An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Desolation Of Smaug (2013), and The Battle Of The Five Armies (2014) — is based on the 1937 novel of the same name, which was written by legendary author J.R.R. Tolkien. Together, they act as a prequel to The Lord Of The Rings.

Throughout the story, we follow the Dwarf prince Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and his loyal crew as they journey to Erebor, their former homeland, to reclaim the Lonely Mountain and its vast treasures from the dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch). Before they can do this, however, they must first retrieve the Arkenstone (also known as the King’s Jewel) so that Thorin can unite the other Dwarf under his rule and protect the mountain from those who would take it.

Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), a Hobbit of the Shire, is convinced by Gandalf (Ian McKellen) to join Thorin and his crew on their quest, taking on the role of a burglar. Along the way, Bilbo encounters Gollum (Andy Serkis) and becomes the new owner of the One Ring. In addition to helping Thorin find the jewel, he must also hide his golden secret.
