Just a few brief months after his once fierce rival Mario celebrated his 25th birthday, SEGA have this week announced that their universally beloved company mascot Sonic The Hedgehog will be celebrating his very own 20th anniversary on June 23rd, 2011.
In addition to his birthday, the perennially cool, be-spiked blue rascal clearly has much more to celebrate, including the astounding announcement that to date, his games have notched up over 70 million units sold worldwide. Quick to branch out from his comfort zone, Sonic also made his name early in a host of other different fields, including comic books, apparel, toys and even television; in which he starred in his own animated series.
SEGA are planning to celebrate this very special year in fine style, with big events due to occur right across the planet – the full details of which will be released throughout the year. Whether 2011 will surpass the achievements made in 2010 is yet to be seen because 2010 was real banner year for Sonic – as it saw the release of one of his finest ever games: the expertly crafted little gem Sonic Colours on Nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS.
