Contrary to predictions and this year’s BAFTAs, Birdman, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s powerful satire documenting the struggles of an ageing film star’s struggle to reinvent himself as a renowned and respected Broadway actor, has scooped up this year’s Oscar for Best Picture and three other major awards.

The predicted winner, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, which won the big prizes at both the BAFTAs and last months Golden Globes, failed to live up to the pre-show predictions and lost out to Birdman for awards including Best Director as well as Best Film.

Oscar Winners 2015 - Birdman

At the end of the evening Birdman was tied with Wes Anderson’s delightful Grand Budapest Hotel – a thrilling, delicate crime romp – with both films winning 4 awards on the night. Boyhood only ended the evening with one Oscar, Patricia Arquette picking up the Best Supporting Actress award.

In an evening with some politically charged acceptance speeches, Eddie Redmayne managed to pip Michael Keaton to the Academy Award for Best Actor for his impressive performance as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. He dedicated his award to the film’s crew, his wife, Hawking’s family and “everyone around the world suffering from ALS”.

Similar sentiments were expressed by Julianne Moore who picked up the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance of a woman suffering from early-onset dementia in Still Alice, of which one of the directors is an ALS sufferer. JK Simmons picked up the best supporting actor gong, as expected, for his portrayal as a draconian music teacher in the film Whiplash, which also went on to win awards for editing and mixing.
