Every week we’re going to be taking a brief look at the biggest and best new releases on DVD and Blu-Ray. Unless otherwise stated, everything listed below is due for release next Monday – so in this case, Monday 30th July – and each title is now available for pre-order on zavvi.com. This week: Julia Roberts is an evil queen, John Cusack is Edgar Allen Poe and the brilliantly rubbish Corey Feldman/Corey Haim vehicle Licence to Drive makes its UK DVD debut…

Mirror Mirror [DVD] [Blu-Ray]

Directed by Tarsem – the director behind The Fall, which is surely one of the best-looking films ever made – Mirror Mirror is a fresh and funny retelling of the Snow White legend. A family adventure for all ages, starring Oscar winner Julia Roberts as the evil Queen who ruthlessly rules her captured kingdom and Lily Collins (The Blind Side) as Snow White, the princess in exile, plus Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as the Prince.

License to Drive [DVD]

Famous eighties acting duo Corey Feldman and Corey Haim team up in madcap teen comedy Licence to Drive.

Les’s friends are relying on him to pass his driving test so he can provide the wheels for the weekend, but he’s more interested in impressing his date Mercedes (Heather Graham). When things don’t go according to plan he steals his grandpa’s immaculate Cadillac. But what was supposed to be a dream date soon turns into a nightmare when Mercedes gets drunk, dances on the bonnet in her stilettos, then passes out in the back.

He calls on his old friend Dean for help and things go from bad to worse when the car is towed and a car chase leads to disastrous consequences.

The Raven [DVD] [Blu-Ray]

When a mother and daughter are found brutally murdered in 19th century Baltimore, Detective Emmett Fields (Luke Evans) makes a startling discovery: the crime resembles a fictional murder described in gory detail in the local newspaper – part of a collection of stories penned by struggling writer and social pariah Edgar Allan Poe. But even as Poe is questioned by police, another grisly murder occurs, also inspired by a popular Poe story.

Realising a serial killer is on the loose using Poe’s writings as the backdrop for his bloody rampage, Fields enlists the author’s help in stopping the attacks. But when it appears someone close to Poe may become the murderer’s next victim, the stakes become even higher and the inventor of the detective story calls on his own powers of deduction to try to solve the case before it’s too late.

Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy [DVD]

“It’s a grand tour of the Nightmare legacy and the people who helped to make it real” Wes Craven. Murderer. Dream Demon. The bastard son of a hundred maniacs. Any way you slice it, there can be only one man-one monster-who epitomises those words; Freddy Krueger.

So get ready for Freddy, in the definitive account of modern cinema’s eternal bogeyman and what has been called the most frightening and imaginative horror franchise in motion picture history!

Special Features:

  • Filmmaker Commentary
  • Slashed Scenes: Extended Interviews with Cast and Crew
  • Expanding the Elm Street Universe: Freddy in Comics and Novels
  • A Nightmare on Elm Street in 10 Minutes
  • Horror’s Hallowed Ground: Return to Elm Street

Swingers [DVD] [Blu-Ray]

Hip and hilarious – critics and audiences alike rave about this must-see comedy hit that’s so money, it catapulted Vince Vaughn (The Break-Up, Wedding Crashers) and Jon Favreau (Couples Retreat, Iron Man) to stardom. It’s the laugh-out-loud look at a fun group of friends who spend their days looking for work and their nights in and out of Hollywood’s coolest after-hours hangouts. When the lovesick Mike (Jon Favreau) can’t seem to shake a relationship rut, his smooth, fast-talking buddy Trent (Vince Vaughn) decides he’ll do whatever it takes to show Mike a good time. Whether laughing over martinis in smoky cocktail lounges… or searching for beautiful babes on an outrageous road trip to Vegas, the young Swingers are determined to rewrite the rules of modern dating.

Axed [DVD]

With the world in financial turmoil, Kurt Wendell has been shaken to the core. His job had always been his anchor, the one place that kept him sane. But now they’ve taken it away from him. And his demons are finally taking over… Unable to tell his family the dreadful truth, Kurt decides to make some serious cutbacks…

Granting his children a day off school and his wife a day off work, he drives the whole family to a remote spot, miles from civilisation. Little do they know what he has in store for them… One last bit of business, a final project that is both sinister and deadly, involving his wife, his children, and the savagely beaten man trapped in the attic…

It’s not only Kurt Wendell that’s getting Axed, as his ex-boss and his horrified family are about to find out, one by one…

Predator X [DVD]

In an effort to save the swamp, Laura decides to work the dying family business giving boat tours of the Louisiana swamp. But on her first sunset tour, deep in the swamp, Laura and her passengers witness two Bayou swamp rats toss a squirming body into a gator pit, only the gators aren’t the ones that feast on the flesh. Instead it’s the most terrifying creature Laura has ever seen…a cloned Pliosaur dinosaur, also known as Predator X.

The Players [DVD]

The quest to get laid is on.

Jean Dujardin and Gilles Lellouche star in a comedy exploring the triumphs and failures of male infidelity in all its desperate, absurd and wildly funny forms. From a sales conference in a hotel in the suburbs to a smart sex addiction clinic, from a swish Parisian nightclub to the glitzy meat market of Las Vegas, the protagonists launch themselves into the age old pursuit. Every timeworn excuse is proffered; every trick in the book is played.

Witty and moving, honest and cynical, hope beats eternal in the lusting male heart, but the road to illicit pleasure is never an easy one.

Absolutely Fabulous: Ab Fab at 20 – The 2012 Specials [DVD]

They’re back – and behaving as outrageously as ever! 20 years after Eddy, Patsy, Saffy, Bubble and Mother first staggered into our lives, they return for three fantastic episodes!

In these hysterical episodes, Saffy’s new best friend forces Patsy to finally reveal her age – to the nearest decade or two; Eddy signs up a legendary French actress for an Albert Hall performance, but can she sing? And, as London goes Olympics mad, someone rather important (Hollywood, darling) rents the house as the ladies undertake some gold medal schmoozing.
