Every week we take a brief look at the biggest and best new releases on DVD and Blu-Ray. Unless otherwise stated, everything listed below is due for release next Monday – so in this case, Monday 1st October – and each title is now available for pre-order on zavvi.com. This week: the gripping misadventures of Walter White continue in the fourth series of Breaking Bad, The Terminator arrives on Blu-Ray as do a handful of Universal horror classics…

Snow White and the Huntsman [DVD] [Blu-Ray]

In the epic action-adventure Snow White and the Huntsman, Kristen Stewart (Twilight) plays the only person in the land fairer than the evil queen (Oscar winner Charlize Theron) who is out to destroy her. But what the wicked ruler never imagined is that the young woman threatening her reign has been training in the art of war with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth, Thor) who was dispatched to kill her. Sam Claflin (Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides) joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power.

The breathtaking new vision of the legendary tale is from Joe Roth, the producer of Alice in Wonderland, producer Sam Mercer (The Sixth Sense) and acclaimed commercial director and state-of-the-art visualist Rupert Sanders.

Breaking Bad: Season 4 [DVD]

The phenomenon continues as Breaking Bad hits a stunning new high with its most suspenseful season yet! In his multiple Emmy Award-winning role, Bryan Cranston stars as Walter White, a one-time mild-mannered chemistry teacher whose transformation into a deadly criminal kicks into overdrive in the explosive fourth season. As his young accomplice, Jesse (Aaron Paul in his Emmy Award-winning role), turns increasingly distant and hostile, Walt must deal with his estranged wife (Anna Gunn), his relentless DEA Agent brother-in-law (Dean Norris), and the ruthless kingpin manipulating the entire operation (Giancarlo Esposito) – culminating in a bombshell season finale that will leave you speechless. Moonrise Kingdom [DVD] [Blu-Ray]

On an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965, two twelve-year-olds (Kara Hayward, Jared Gilman) who fall in love, make a secret pact and run away together into the wilderness.

As a local search party led by the Sheriff (Bruce Willis) and the girl’s parents (Bill Murray, Frances McDormand) try to hunt them down, a violent storm is brewing off-shore – and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in more ways than anyone can handle.

Spartacus: Vengeance [DVD] [Blu-Ray]

On the heels of the bloody escape from the House of Batiatus that concluded “Spartacus: Blood and Sand”, the gladiator rebellion continues and begins to strike fear into the heart of the Roman Republic in “Spartacus: Vengeance”. Gaius Claudius Glaber and his Roman troops are sent to Capua to crush the growing band of freed slaves that Spartacus leads before it can inflict further damage. Spartacus is presented the choice of satisfying his personal need for vengeance against the man that condemned his wife to slavery and eventual death or making the larger sacrifices necessary to keep his budding army from breaking apart. Containing all of the blood-soaked action, exotic sexuality, and villainy and heroism that has come to distinguish the series, the tale of Spartacus resumes in epic fashion.

Modern Family: Season 3 [DVD] [Blu-Ray]

Critically acclaimed and lauded for revitalising the television sitcom, Modern Family is also quickly cementing itself as a culturally defining series. A recipient of the 2010 and 2011 Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series, Modern Family returns for its third season.

Modern Family stars Ed O’Neill as Jay, Julie Bowen as Claire, Ty Burrell as Phil, Sofía Vergara as Gloria, Jesse Tyler Ferguson as Mitchell, Eric Stonestreet as Cameron, Sarah Hyland as Haley, Nolan Gould as Luke, Ariel Winter as Alex, Rico Rodriguez as Manny and Aubrey Anderson-Emmons as Lily. These three unique families give us an honest and often hilarious look into the sometimes warm, sometimes twisted, embrace of the modern family.

The Pact [DVD] [Blu-Ray]

Caity Lotz (Death Valley, Mad Men) gives the breakout performance of the year in this edge-of-your seat horror that chills to the bone.

Struggling to hold her family together after the death of their mother, biker-chick Annie (Lotz) returns to the family home. There she senses a mysterious presence, discovering a terrifying evil spirit that puts her and those closest to her in grave danger. Confronting the spirit and her family’s dark secrets from the past, can she break free from this living nightmare…?

The Hollow Crown: Series 1 [DVD]

This stunning adaptation tells the story of three Kings, Richard II, Henry IV & Henry V and their battle for survival. Shakespeare’s epic yet intimate plays are filmed in the visually breathtaking landscape and architecture of the period. Superb performances by Ben Whishaw, Tom Hiddleston & Jeremy Irons are not to be missed. These rich films are woven with the some of Shakespeare’s finest poetry.

Bones: Season 7 [DVD] [Blu-Ray]

Bones, a darkly amusing procedural entering its seventh season, is inspired by real-life forensic anthropologist and novelist Kathy Reichs.

In last season’s final episode, Brennan stunned Booth when she revealed the news that she was pregnant with his child. In the Season Seven premiere, we pick up with the new couple well into Brennan’s pregnancy. Still seeing the world from radically different perspectives, Booth and Brennan grapple with the issues surrounding the upcoming birth of their child – all while continuing to deal with a series of gruesome and baffling crimes. And this season brings more than a baby. Our team will also have to contend with a nefarious tech-savvy foe who uses his unparalleled skills to challenge Booth, Brennan and the squints to solve a string of murders designed to embarrass and humiliate them.

Casa De Mi Padre [DVD] [Blu-ray]

From the makers of Anchorman and the writers of the American TV show Saturday Night Live comes Casa de mi Padre, the hilarious new comedy with Will Ferrell.

Armando Alvarez (Will Ferrell – Anchorman) has lived and worked on his father’s ranch his entire life. As the ranch encounters financial difficulties, Armando’s younger brother Raul (Diego Luna – Contraband), a successful international businessman, pledges to settle all debts his father has incurred. When Raul’s business dealings turn out to be less than legit, all hell breaks loose as they find themselves in a war with Mexico’s most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza (Gael García Bernal – Babel). Armando embraces his manhood to protect what he cares for the most.

The Only Way Is Essex: Series 5 [DVD]

We’re heading back to Essex for a fifth series of the uber glamorous show that gave us the ‘vajazzle’ and made everything ‘reem’.

It’s time for some weighty issues as Arg reveals his dramatic weight loss and takes on the marathon whilst Lauren G talks to Lydia about her own weight concerns and continuing rivalry with Jess.

The boys are back in town with Mario, Ricky, Little Chris and Mick developing a strong bromance.

Elsewhere, will Gemma finally be lucky in love when she meets mysterious new boy Charlie? Or could his love of all things Ricky Martin and girly mags be a Titanic problem?

The course of true love never does run smoothly in Essex and Lucy and Mario are forced to celebrate their one-year anniversary among another cheating scandal. Tom P and Lauren P go out on a date but their brewing relationship is at the centre of much gossip, especially when Mark’s ex Lauren G confronts Tom P about his porky pies…

Cara and Billie also go on the warpath with Arg over their argument with Jess and we finally find out who Tom K has been texting!

The Only Way is Essex continues to entertain as we see lovable Nanny Pat get legless, Arg and Gemma reveal a bombshell and that’s all before a shock proposal in Marbella and a special appearance from Tinchy Stryder!

The Terminator [Blu-Ray]

Doctor Who: The Ambassadors of Death [DVD]

Something has gone seriously wrong with Mars Probe 7. With no contact from the astronauts since the rocket started its return journey from Mars, Space Control is now extremely worried about the fate of the crew. A rescue mission recovers something – but whatever it is, it certainly isn’t human. To find out what has happened to the astronauts, the Doctor must head into space without the Tardis…

Universal Classi Monsters: The Essential Collection [Blu-Ray]

For the first time ever, eight of the most iconic cinematic masterpieces of the horror genre are available together on Blu-ray as Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection. Digitally restored in perfect high-definition picture and perfect high-definition sound.
