This week is definitely a good week for fantastic film releases, so here are my top two picks! Enjoy.
Skyfall – Starring Daniel Craig as the iconic James Bond, Skyfall is the 23rd film in the longest-running film series of all time. This action-packed movie shows the legendary 007 agent struggle with his loyalty to M (Judi Dench) following the grave misdemeanours of his latest assignment, and as MI6 becomes the target of various attacks conducted by a ghost from M’s past.
This string of recent disasters prompts the new Chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee (Ralph Fiennes) to question M’s capabilities in her position of authority. Agents around the world have been exposed to their enemies, and MI6 has been compromised, leaving Bond as the only agent M can trust. It is up to them to follow the breadcrumbs, but the motives of this mysterious enemy have not yet come to light. Filled with as much dark and satirical humour as there is adrenalin-fuelled, fast-paced action, Skyfall is a film worthy of the legend it portrays. For James Bond fans new and old alike, this is a 007 film not to be missed out on.
Gangster Squad – Featuring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling amongst a wholly star studded cast, Gangster Squad is a film set in the city of Los Angeles, in 1949. This intense film revolves around a secret crew of police officers, who have teamed up in order to try to take down the mobster king who runs their city: Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn).
Cohen has taken over the criminal underworld of California, and has established his own enterprise across the Western United States, with the police eating out of his palm. It’s up to Sergeant John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and his personally selected team of honest cops to go up against Cohen, and wage guerrilla warfare with him and his criminal empire. Known by the media as The Gangster Squad, this team of police offers have learnt they need to stop playing by the rules if they want to take down Cohen once and for all.
