The first ever British Inspiration Awards ceremony took place in the heart of London last week, and zavvi.com were in attendance to help in celebrating the people, and the achievements, that have helped to “put the Great into Great Britain.” Hosted by Richard Madely, the ceremony has been created solely to recognise those who have contributed to Britain’s economic, social and artistic development through creative endeavor. They have been designed primarily to “help Britain develop a positive spirit for the future, and foster a community where difference and diversity are looked upon as an asset.”
Alexander McQueen, Sir George Martin, Nick Park, Michael Eavis, Elisabeth Murdoch, Sir James Dyson, Sir Terence Conran, Andrew Bourne, Baroness Susan Greenfield and Ian Livingstone were recognised for their contributions to the creative economy of Great Britain, and for the inspiration that they have given to others inside (and outside of) their respective fields, and for the success that they have brought to the country from across the world.
In addition, taking some much needed time out from the campaign trail, the three leaders of the country’s main political parties put their full support behind the initiative. Prime Minister Gordon Brown said, “I am enormously proud of the talented people in this country who, through their creative and entrepreneurial gifts, illuminate their lives and enrich ours. And the British Inspiration Awards is a great way of both recognising their endeavors and celebrating our achievements as a nation.” David Cameron: “British design and creativity has led the world for many years, and we should be proud of that heritage. I welcome the opportunity this event brings to celebrate our many creative successes.” Nick Clegg: “These awards are a great initiative and will, I’m sure, inspire people from different backgrounds all over the UK to get creative.
The Awards are a charity-facing event with 100% of net proceeds going to UK charities, including help for the families of UK Armed Forces. They are supported by industries including fashion, music, film, video games, interactive entertainment, television and media.
