A rare sequel

Sequels are rarely this good. Especially sequels to financially successful horror films. I wasn't a huge fan of the original & my expectations were not particularly high for this one. What they have managed to do here is create a follow on story that feels seamless in terms of tone, look & narrative whilst managing to broaden the story & add weight to the original idea. It is in my opinion, dare I say it, a sequel that improves upon the original. After an opening scene that would have taken place during or before the timeline of the first film it quickly jumps forward 6 months [about 28 weeks]. Here we have the military bringing several unifected civilians back to the mainland & keeping them quarantined on the Canary Wharf. Very little is known or understood about the Rage virus that nearly wiped everybody out only that all those infected are presumed dead. The film takes it's time in building up to the inevitable events that unfold. It's never a question of whether it will happen, more when & how. This is by no means a tacked on sequel but a very clever advancement of the first. The story elements are in no way shoehorned, it feels like a genuine continuation. It's not just the script that shines, but the performances are consistently good all round, including the 2 child actors who are effectively the films stars. The pacing is just right & the slow build up is done perfect justice by the pay off. Before things go wrong the tone always feels dark & there is the feeling that very bad things are afoot. Make no mistake when things finally happen this turns incredibly nasty - the subtle sense of dread turns to outright panic. Be prepared for some incredibly graphic violence. Don't become attached to too many of the main characters either, many of their fates are not favourable. I will say no more for fear of spoiling what is a truly exciting experience for anybody who was a fan of the first film. If you're even just a little curious then do yourself a favour & see it. The first half will gradually pull you in whilst the second will thrill you with exciting set piece after exciting set piece. A perfect bookend to the first movie. Outstanding !!
