Exploding space eggs!

Contamination is for those who know and appreciate the wild Italian genre cinema of the 80's. With this i'm of course referring to movies like Zombie Flesh-Eaters and stuff like The Last Hunter. As many of you know in the 80's there was an "anything goes" -spirit with the Italian genre cinema, and when some movie managed to grab the audiences attention (and wallets too!) there were bound to be an Italian made variant with the same themes. Sometimes the ideas based on other movies were actually better than the movies where the ideas originated from. Contamination took its cues from movies like Alien and even China Syndrome, but threw them into a such blender that the outcome was something totally different, and out there. The main premise of the movie is quite silly (with aliens eggs that make peoples chests burst), but everything is played straight. The movie has a sci fi horror feel to it, and the fabulously energetic and moody Goblin score to boot. It's also the best of these "alien inspired" genre movies. There are others of course, but none have the feel, cast, music and the action this one has. There's a constant sense of dread and almost apocalyptic feel to it with some almost James Bond -esque stuff thrown in! As a movie i'd recommend it as the next step after seeing other better known genre movies like Zombie Flesh-eaters. The reason i'm constantly referring this one as an example is because Contamination shares part of the same cast, and is also a part of the same wave of genre movies. I've seen this movie from VHS and also from the DVD. I like having this high quality Blu-ray for my 50" plasma TV, but i must say that the Arrow Films DVD is also a solid release. This particular set comes with both the Blu-ray and DVD. I'd rate this movie as a solid three stars and the picture quality as four. The audio is also solid. As a whole i rated this package as four stars. The reason being that this isn't a real classic, but a fun one regardless. The kind of a movie that has lots of repeat value as its pure entertainment. Overall a great release with some interesting extras. I also like the fact that Arrow Films are using reversible sleeves. In this case i haven't yet made my mind whether i'd choose the original art, or the newly commissioned one, but i'm happy that i'm the one who can be the judge of that! So Arrow Films keep these gems coming, and keep up the good work!
