Great DVD, average film

While broadly entertaining, this film is, in places, wildly inaccurate. The opening sequence, for instance - in which James Brown shoots a hole in the ceiling during a meeting - is fictitious. There are some nice performances here, but the film does have a bit of a budget/made-for-TV feel about it. I had hoped it would rival the Ray Charles biopic 'Ray', but it came off a bit more like 'Cadillac Records'; tending towards slightly cartoonish impersonations, and with few of the wigs or costumes or period settings looking quite right. Chadwick Boseman does a fair job of mimicking Brown's dancing - although of course he is nowhere close to the real deal - but the vocals are all lip-synched, which is a bit off-putting and ultimately makes Brown - one of the most supernaturally gifted live performers of all time - look a bit naff. Thus, one is left asking the question; What is the point of making a biopic about one of the greatest performers in history, if the result is to leave people wondering why he was supposedly so brilliant? This is a nicely packaged DVD with some good special features, which elevated my review from three stars to four. However, for anybody wanting to understand James Brown's brilliance as a performer and/or his importance as a black figure and civil rights leader - something the biopic doesn't do a great job of depicting - I would recommend buying The Night James Brown Saved Boston instead, which is a stunning and exhilarating documentary, crammed with phenomenal performance and interview footage.

great film

A great and honest insight in to the man and the life struggles to achieve greatness through adversity with single minded determination and talent. A very easy watch and kept me gripped all the way through the film. Really good performances and believable portrayal of James Brown. A must buy.
