The Law Of The Jungle

Released in 1894, The Jungle Book originated as a collection of stories written by the English author Rudyard Kipling. The narrative focuses on a young boy (known as a ‘man-cub’) called Mowgli, who is raised in the heart of the jungle by wolves.

Various adaptations have been made, including a popular 1967 animated film by Walt Disney Productions — the last movie that Walt Disney himself was involved in. Much like the source material, The Jungle Book follows Mowgli as he is threatened by the arrival of Shere Khan, a tiger with a taste for the flesh of man. Mowgli’s friends Baloo (a bear) and Bagheera (a panther) desperately try to protect him.

The film’s cast includes Bruce Reitherman as Mowgli, Phil Harris as Baloo the sloth bear, Sebastian Cabot as the black panther Bagheera, Louis Prima as orangutan King Louie, and George Sanders as Shere Khan — amongst others. In addition to stellar voice work, the film also features a number of catch songs, such as ‘The Bare Necessities’ and ‘I Wanna Be Like You’.

In 2016, a live-action adaptation was made by director Jon Favreau. This iteration recounts the tale of Mowgli once again, using incredible visual effects to bring to life the various jungle animals. Naturally, the film features a new cast: Neel Sethi as Mowgli, Ben Kingsley as Bagheera, Bill Murray as Baloo, Idris Elba as Shere Khan, Lupita Nyong'o as Raksha, Scarlett Johansson as Kaa, Giancarlo Esposito as Akela, and Christopher Walken as King Louie.
