2 Star Release of a 5 Star Film

"Videodrome has a philosophy, and that's what makes it dangerous..." A bizzare, visceral body-horror classic, this is essential viewing in the David Cronenberg back catalogue. No excuses. The quality of the blu-ray transfer isn't the best in the world, but it's adequate, and far superior to the DVD edition. Oddly, for a cult classic of Videodrome's stature, there are no special features, which is a real shame. Any completionists should also note that this is a cut version of the film. Overall, Videodrome fans deserve much better, and I can't help but think Universal put out a poor DVD/blu-ray only to retain the rights to the film. So wait until August when the almighty Arrow Video are releasing a long-awaited Special Edition of the uncut version...

Videodrome

Videodrome is a lot like Existenz - another Cronenberg classic. I just love his weird sense of humanity and perception. This is a strange one to review and I don't mean the storyline. From the opening scenes, there is a lot of digital noise and heavy grain in various places, yet on closeups, the video is as sharp and clear as you'd expect from blu-ray. As the movie goes on, the video improves considerably. It's as if they took 2 different tapes and spliced them together. The DVD version fails in comparison, that is just a nightmare compared to this. Colours are superb throughout.
