Originally created in 1940 by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera,‘Tom and Jerry’is an animated series of short films and cartoons, produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The series features comic fights between a house catnamedTomand a mouse named Jerry, as the two try to get the best of each other. The pair truly have a love-hate relationship.

Tom rarely manages to win the fight against Jerry, due to Jerry’s cleverness, cunning abilities, and luck. However, in several episodes and short films, the pair unite and pursue a common goal, showing that they really are friends in the end.

There are many other popular characters in the series, such as Spike and Tyke. Tom sometimes must deal with Spike, the bulldog who is portrayed as being angry and vicious, but easily outwitted. Spike often attacks Tom for bothering him or annoying his son Tyke while trying to get Jerry.

The series of cartoons were so popular, several spinoffs have been developed over the years, including ‘The Tom and Jerry Show’ (1975),‘The Tom and Jerry Comedy Show’ (1980),‘Tom & Jerry Kids’ (1990),‘Tom and Jerry Tales’ (2006–08), and‘The Tom and Jerry Show’ (2014). There have also been several feature-length films, including ‘Tom and Jerry: The Movie’ (1992).
