Robots In Disguise

During the earliest days of the franchise, Transformers existed as a line of toys overseen by the company Hasbro. Coinciding with the development of these products, Marvel Comics was hired to oversee the invention of a background story and the characters that would inhabit the world. Jim Shooter (editor-in-chief) focused on the former while Dennis O’Neil (writer) took responsibility for the latter. However, O’Neil was ultimately replaced by Bob Budiansky, his successor employed because of concerns regarding the quality of his work.

Concurrently, an animated TV series of the same name was released via syndication, helmed by the animation studio Toei. Despite adhering to the basic premise laid out by Budiansky, the show took a wildly different approach to the narrative, which resulted in there being branching continuities. Nevertheless, audiences were familiarised with Optimus Prime (the leader of the Autobots) and Megatron (the leader of the Decepticons), two warring leaders from an alien society composed of robots with the ability to transform into different vehicles.

Capitalising on the established popularity of the franchise, a live-action film adaptation was released in 2007. Director Michael Bay spearheaded this new venture and shifted the focus to a teenager called Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf), who encounters the eponymous robots after purchasing a new car that is revealed to be the Autobot Bumblebee. Hugely successful, the movie spawned multiple sequels, most of which were helmed by Bay.
