Engrossing investigations into our weird world

The Arthur C Clarke’s Mysterious World series disk set is an essential purchase if you’re a fan of the weird and wonderful. For a series that was made in 1980, for the most part it still holds up today. It’s strange watching the bit about the crystal skull – the elderly female owner flew into London in the early 80s to have it examined; now it’s been theorised she wasn’t being truthful about where it was discovered! What is amazing about this series is they were doing all this stuff thirty years before the likes of Destination Truth and Fact or Faked: The Paranormal Files. What impresses is the producer’s timing. They were always present at the demonstration of some one-off event, i.e., burning tons of wood to fuse stone like that observed at ancient stone walls in Scotland, the aforementioned crystal skull exam, the demonstration of ancient batteries from Iran, the whitewashing of a cape onto the ‘rude man of Cerne’ giant etched into the English landscape, etc. The series remains riveting viewing and the picture quality is excellent for DVD. And if none of the above impresses you, let’s not forget THAT iconic theme.
