Dexter - The final season

If, like me you have watched Dexter for years, you would have been 'looking forward' to the ending of the show (by looking forward, I mean hoping for a satisfying ending - not literally wishing for the show to end). The final season started well and featured two excellent guest stars (Aaron McCusker who played Jamie Maguire in the UK version of Shameless and the wonderful Charlotte Rampling) and as usual with Dexter, the season had two distinctive story arcs, the first one resolved in the first half of the season which then lead to the final ever story arc (and nemesis) for Dexter. Unfortunately, the final story arc was not resolved in a satisfying way (We know that Dexter always likes to get his man (or woman) and we know what always happens when he does.... well this time he deviated and that deviation had major consequences). The final episode of any series should really leave you feeling satisfied. It should wrap up stories in full and leave you feeling content knowing that everything was resolved. Imagine how you feel after a really good meal, that lovely satisfied feeling – that is the sort feeling you should have had after watching the final ever episode of Dexter, but it left me feeling hungry for more and not at all satisfied. I did notice that at the beginning of the final season, there were a couple of unexplained deviations from the season seven storylines. At the end of the seventh season, Lt. Angel Batista had left the force to run a restaurant – suddenly he was back in the force – also, Deputy Chief Tom Matthews had retired, but suddenly he was back running Miami Metro again – These changes both went without any explanation. Now I know this is American television and they do quite like to change the established facts to suit the story on US tv, but as both of these events occurred late in season seven, it isn’t as if viewers are not going to remember… I would have loved to be able to give the final season of Dexter 5 stars, but owing to the really poor final episode, I can only give it 4 out of 5.
