‘He’s the Punisher’

Francis ‘Frank’ Castle is a fictional character appearing in the American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He was created by writer Gerry Conway and artist John Romita Sr.

Driven by the deaths of his family, who were killed by the mob for witnessing a killing in New York City’s Central Park, Frank wages a one-man war on crime — his family’s killers were the first of many to face the Punisher’s merciless form of justice.

The Punisher made his first appearance on TV in 1989, portrayed by actor Dolph Lundgren. Directed by Mark Goldbatt and written by Boaz Yakin, the show takes a different approach to the comic book version of Frank’s origin story, with the trademark skull shirt being entirely absent.

Following this, the 2004 remake of The Punisher drew inspiration from two comic book stories, The Punisher: Year One and Welcome Back Frank. Directed by Jonathan Hensleigh, the eponymous character is portrayed by Thomas Jane, with John Travolta also appearing as Howard Saint.

Due to the success of the character’s prior movies, the Punisher was given a series on Netflix, which aired in 2017 — created by Steve Lightfoot and produced by Marvel Television. The anti-hero was portrayed by Jon Bernthal, with his iteration of the character existing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). We follow the vigilante through two seasons as he slowly dismantles the criminal underworld, no matter how lethal the outcome. By delving into Frank’s psyche, audiences get to see the man behind the skull.
