Disney's Epic Mickey

Mickey Mouse, star of the silver screen, is in trouble. He's found himself trapped in the Wasteland, a nightmarish version of Disneyland inhabited by characters from Disney's forgotten past. Not only that, but the Wasteland has come under attack from the malevolent Shadow Blot, a problem that Mickey himself may have caused. In order to save the Wasteland Mickey will require all his skills and he's going to need you and the Wiimote to help him. Epic Mickey is a vast, engaging platformer/puzzle solver that any player of Banjo-Kazooie or even Mario's later outings would be familiar with. You control Mickey in big 3D playing spaces where you're tasked with various missions to carry out. Most of these missions revolve around using Paint to paint-in areas of the environment in order to help your task. Thinner can also be used to reverse the effects of Paint. It's a neat way of giving Mickey a tool and a weapon that is totally in tune with his cartoon world. The world itself is a darker, slightly more twisted version of Disney's original cartoons, for reasons that become clear as the game progresses. It suits the Wii perfectly and shows what is achievable using the console's relatively small graphic capabilities. For example the fight onboard Hook's pirate ship is a masterpiece of atmosphere and challenge. If you're a fan of Disney or have been to the theme parks you'll have lots of fun checking out the references and the easter eggs the game contains. The learning curve is ideal for kids and proves plenty challenging for adults as well. Some elements of the game do become repetitive such as navigating the 2D platforming sections every single time you jump between lands or accquiring objects for use in your quest. The camera can also be problematic too, while the game claims to give you control over it, sometimes it refuses to budge making it very difficult to judge your next step. Overall though Epic Mickey is a fantastically imaginitive game that takes Disney in new directions with older characters. It's challenging and rewarding and, were it not for the camera issues especially, would get 5/5.Report this review
One of the best reasons to dust off the ol' Wii. Haven't played any Wii title since Mario Galaxy 2 and this one truly surprised me. I really recommend this game to anyone, both hardcore and casual gamers. A must buy if you own a Wii in my opinion.Report this review
